Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Geography) for Friday, July 4, 2025 (Season 41, Game 215):
In 2023 these 2 nations agreed to redraw part of their border near the Matterhorn due to melting glaciers
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Andi Levenson, a senior paralegal from Narberth, Pennsylvania![]() |
Ricky Chandak, a financial assurance senior from Boston, Massachusetts![]() |
Scott Riccardi, an engineer from Somerville, New Jersey (1-day total: $17,600)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
On this Independence Day in the United States, I only got one day’s reprieve from saying “We have a new champion on Jeopardy!“. Today’s returning champion is Scott Riccardi, who came from second place to unseat Jason Singer. Looking to have an excellent Fourth of July themselves today are challengers Andi Levenson and Ricky Chandak, whose job title on the J! website, “Financial Assurance Senior”, appears to be missing a noun. We shall see if a mistake was made on the show’s part, or if that is Ricky’s full job title.
At least we can feasibly talk about someone’s chances in Champions Wildcard for the first time in a number of weeks. This may be a bit of a hot take, but I think James Corson has a better chance of advancing to the Tournament of Champions than Jason Singer does—and if the field somehow expands to the point that Steven Hoying and Stella Trout get included, the two of them would come in as the favorites at this point. (Of course, this is thanks to the stats run through the Unified Prediction Model.)

Correct response: What are Switzerland & Italy?

As reported in The Guardian, climate change is wreaking havoc on Alpine glaciers in Europe. As the border between Switzerland and Italy is defined as the ridgeline of the glacier near the Matterhorn, and the melting of glaciers can affect where that ridgeline is, the border between the two nations needed to be redrawn.
European geography clues always play a touch more difficult than I expect them to; I definitely would not be surprised to see some guesses of “Switzerland & France” today.

Ricky: For your best chance of victory, bet between $4,001 (just in case Scott bets $2,000 or less) and $9,599 (keeping Andi locked out.) (Actual bet: $2,600)
Andi: Bet no more than $3,400 to stay ahead of Scott if Scott bets to cover and is incorrect. (Actual bet: $1,600)

Viewers of Rick Steves on PBS would know that the Matterhorn borders Italy rather than France. Curiously, Steves advises the readers of his travel books not to worry too much about the Matterhorn in planning their trips, since it is often shrouded in clouds.
Years ago — late 80s — I skied from Zermatt to Cervinia, up the lifts and trains from Zermatt, across the glacier where there was a sign marking the international border, and then down into the lovely Italian town of Cervinia for a wonderful pasta lunch. And then back up after lunch, over the glacier again and down the Swiss side into Zermatt, arriving in time for afternoon cocktails. Good times and good memories, all within sight of the Matterhorn, which by the way doesn’t have the famous look look from the Italian side. Climate change and melting glaciers were on no one’s mind. I was in my 30s and a damn good skier, then.
Great story and memory, Al!
Immediately knew Switzerland but came up with Austria instead of Italy. Oh well, considering the losing streak I’ve been on I take that
Somehow I also remembered some European geography, and, knew the Matterhorn was in Switzerland. Didn’t remember, or, possibly knew that it formed part of the border between Switzerland, and, one of it’s neighbors. Guessed Italy, which was the correct response. Ended the week with having two definite Final Jeopardy wins, and, a “kinda sorta” win.
I did, too, and I know why — the movie “The Sound of Music”, where the von Trapp family escaped Austria over the mountains to Switzerland. I now know that in actuality, they escaped to Italy.
Same guess for me Peepo!
Perhaps because my grandfather was born in Italy (sometime in the 1800’s), I chose Italy and Switzerland rather than France and Switzerland. Fairly straightforward and not too difficult final, in my opinion.
Looks like we have a pretty good champ in Scott with a two-day average of $34,000 per day. Not bad. Congratulations to Scott.
p.s.
Would it be correct to say that we had 2 seniors on today’s episode? 🙂
“Financial Assurance Senior” is the modern term for what used to be referred to as an “Audit Senior Accountant” in the public accounting world.
Did anyone else think bicep, not biceps, should have been ruled wrong?
Merriam-Webster, at its own website, gives “or bicep” in the defintion of “biceps”; thus, by the show’s standards, it’s acceptable: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/biceps
