Isaac Hirsch on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

This weekend’s encore presentation of Jeopardy! features Isaac Hirsch attempting to become, at the time, the 18th superchampion in Jeopardy! history; 17 of the previous 21 9-time champions up to that point had won their tenth. However, things did not quite work out the way Isaac wanted them to, due to a mistake he made in between clues #60 and 61.

Timothy Leary, a famous counterculture figure of the 1960s most famous today for the saying “Turn on, tune in, drop out” was a Harvard clinical psychologist who became imprisoned in 1970 due to his fondness for many drugs considered at that time to be illegal. However, Leary had designed the behavioral tests used to determine his propensity to escape; knowing this, he faked his answers in order to send him to the lowest-security prison available, making his escape later that year significantly easier for him.

Game Recap:

Despite a $23,400 Coryat score and 25 correct responses, things did not go particularly well for Isaac on the game’s four wagering clues. He lost $3,000 on the first one and $5,000 on the second; when he found DD3 immediately after DD2, he was sufficiently afraid to make what J! Archive calls a “fearful wager” (less than the clue’s value). The combination of all three of those happenings meant that Jay had a $900 lead going into Final Jeopardy.

Final Jeopardy turned out to be a Triple Stumper, which ordinarily would have been advantage Isaac. However, Isaac made his calculations to try to keep Erika locked out and not thinking about what Jay would do on a cover bet, even holding up his wagering scratch paper during the closing to explain what happened. That meant that Isaac did not win his tenth game and Jay is your new champion! My program guide tells me that Jay’s title defense rounds out the Season 41 weekend encore presentations next weekend.

Scores going into Final:

Jay $16,200
Isaac $15,300
Erika $600

Tonight’s results:

Erika $600 – $0 = $600 (Who is ???)
Isaac $15,300 – $14,000 = $1,300 (Who is Manson?)
Jay $16,200 – $14,401 = $1,799 (Who is Manson?) (1-day total: $1,799)

Jay Fisher, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the August 30-31, 2025 game.)
