Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, September 4, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the September 4, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that today’s game is an encore presentation of the game that originally aired on March 6, 2025.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category British Royalty) for Thursday, September 4, 2025 (Season 41, Game 129):

In the 12th c. after walking barefoot, this man stripped down & allowed himself to be flogged by dozens of monks

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada (0 wins)
Juveria Zaheer on Jeopardy!

Roger Craig on Jeopardy!
Matt Amodio, a quantitative researcher from New York, New York (1 win)
Matt Amodio on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Tonight’s Jeopardy! encore presentation is game 2 of the 2025 Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament final between Matt Amodio, Juveria Zaheer, and Roger Craig. After winning Game 1 yesterday, Matt entered this one a win away from victory.

One thing that might have been missed yesterday: Hulu’s original press release that did originally say “Complete Seasons” for both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune has since been changed to “Curated Collection” for both of those shows. To Michael Davies, who wondered on Substack yesterday, “Now there was some word out there, I think, maybe incorrectly reported that there were going to be entire seasons up…”—once again, that information was coming directly from Hulu itself, and a screenshot of this was posted to Reddit a couple of weeks ago. This isn’t the first time this has happened, either. We need to be able to trust information that is coming from either the show or its official partners; we certainly could when it came from Harry Friedman’s office. Certainly, I think that Jeopardy! fans are growing tired of hearing changes from what the fandom believes to be official announcements, Save the rugpulls for the crypto bros; we can absolutely stand to wait a few days for the ink to dry on agreements before they’re confirmed by the show, instead of hearing responses of “we just announced this a few hours ago, give us time to iron out the details”. (The time to iron out the details is before the announcement so that the details are available to those who want them.)

Correct response: Who is Henry II?

After the murder of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral, Henry II believed that he had been “haunted” by the ghost of Thomas. Thus, Henry believed that he needed to do penance; that penance was that he walked barefoot from outside of the city to the cathedral, also permitting himself to be flogged 300 times by monks. This permitted Henry to believe that he had been forgiven by God; this also turned Henry’s personal fortunes around as an invasion by the Scots from the north was put down shortly thereafter.

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Thursday, September 4, 2025 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Note: If you’d like to see the full statistics from this game, check out the original recap, from March 6, 2025.

Game Recap:

The game was very close through 30 clues; each player had 9 correct responses and 1 incorrect response on the opening board. Juveria broke things open early in Double Jeopardy with a True Daily Double, giving her a lead that she would hold throughout the remainder of the second board. However, things weren’t a runaway going into Final.

Today’s Final Jeopardy turned out to be a Triple Stumper, and Matt—with a game in hand—made a more conservative Final Jeopardy wager, meaning that he ended up prevailing on the Triple Stumper to get the guaranteed spot in 2025 Jeopardy! Masters. As it turned out, both Juveria and Roger got in as well.

Tomorrow, the encore presentations conclude with an encore presentation of the final game of Season 41, which leads to a rather interesting situation as I’ll outline tomorrow morning.

Scores going into Final:

Juveria $16,000
Matt $13,600
Roger $9,400

Tonight’s results:

Roger $9,400 – $4,201 = $5,199 (Who Edward Richard I Henry)
Matt $13,600 – $2,401 = $11,199 (Who Richard I) (2 wins)
Juveria $16,000 – $11,201 = $4,799 (Who is Richard the Lionheart)

Matt Amodio, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the September 4, 2025 game.)
