Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category City Nicknames) for November 29-30, 2025 (Season 41, Game 157):

The poet Albius Tibullus called a city this in the late 1st century B.C., some 700 years after its traditional founding

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Thomas Wilson on Jeopardy!

Dondi DeMarco on Jeopardy!
Andrew Hayes, a law student originally from Tupelo, Mississippi (4-day total: $98,603)
Andrew Hayes on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

On this Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the weekend encore presentations continue their look back at the long run of successive champions we had in April, with today featuring Andrew Hayes going for victory #5 and Thomas Wilson & Dondi DeMarco attempting to stop him.

One thing I’ve noticed, looking quite far into my television guide: The episode set to air on December 15 is listed in my guide as “S41 Second Chance” instead of “Jeopardy! · S42 E71”. I know that the average Jeopardy! viewer is usually more intelligent than the average American. However, from my experience in the comments here, I know viewers have still been confused by this notation in the past, as they have seen the previous season in the listing and incorrectly assumed it’s a rerun. Due to this confusion, I think that Michael Davies et al. should seriously consider editing their episode labels ASAP, referring to these episodes “Jeopardy · S42 E71, Second Chance”, to make clear to all viewers that the episode is both new and part of the Second Chance competition.

Correct response: What is The Eternal City?

In his Elegies, Albius Tibullus wrote Romulus aeternae nondum formaverat urbis moenia, consorti non habitanda Remo, referring to Rome as “The Eternal City” for the first time.

As someone who is very familiar with that specific metonym being used to refer to Rome in many contexts, I found this Final Jeopardy clue to be very straightforward, though the players did not quite have as much success on it, as you’ll see in the recap.

Game Recap:

As has happened so many times in the 2020s, Dondi DeMarco proved why it’s so important to make aggressive wagers on the Daily Doubles. He only bet $2,000 of his $10,800 score on DD3, and while it put him in a strong position, both Andrew and Thomas did play well enough on the final 19 clues to ensure it wasn’t a runaway. The nearly $9,000 left on the table on DD3 certainly would have been better put to use in Dondi’s score, as an extra $4,801 would have ensured a runaway. (It should also be pointed out that, in general, over the history of the show, Daily Doubles are answered correctly on average at a rate that suggests that players need to bet significantly more than they currently do on them.)

Andrew still being in contention going into Final proved vital, as he was the only player to come up with a correct response on the game’s 61st clue, picking up that 5th victory. At least Dondi will be returning in a few weeks in the third week of the Second Chance competition.

Scores going into Final:

Dondi $18,400
Andrew $11,600
Thomas $9,600

Tonight’s results:

Thomas $9,600 – $9,000 = $600 (What is Troy? Love you Elizabeth, Louis, Gianna, Baby)
Andrew $11,600 + $7,601 = $19,201 (What is the Eternal City? It’s been fun!) (5-day total: $117,804)
Dondi $18,400 – $5,001 = $13,399 (What is…)
