The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO Act for short) was drafted in the early 1970s to combat organized crime in the United States. Law professor G. Robert Blakey drafted the legislation, and many—especially in the Italian-American community—suspected that Blakey intentionally used the acronym RICO because it was the main character’s name in the 1931 film Little Caesar.
