Today’s season 25 Coryat: 25000 on the episode originally airing 3-13-09 (27800 without 4 negs, all in the Jeopardy round).
Care for a recap? The contestants:
 |
Bryan Shilowich of Cambridge MA |
 |
Jason Shore of Plano TX |
 |
Jennifer North of Jersey City NJ |
This was my first attempt at Bryan’s picture, but I liked it so much I decided not to toss it:

The day started with a triple-stumper (which I got), in Double “L” Words: “To plunder, or the loot that was plundered.” Look at today’s tweeted clue and response, which was in that category too. I’ve never heard of this and racked my brain for nothing! I suppose it was a good exercise.
I got this triple-stumper too in It’s Reigning Men (all together: Hallelujah!), and swept the category: “Fyodor I, False Dmitry I.” The next clue was the Daily Double, in the same category. Jason had control of the board. He had gotten 3 right and had 1800. Jennifer and Bryan had each gotten 2 right, and had 1400 and 800 respectively. Jason wagered it all on this clue: “Hercule Grimaldi, Honore Grimaldi.” He missed it. 🙁
At the first break, Jason had answered 2 more since his Daily Double, and had 600. Jennifer still had 1400. Bryan had answered one right and had 1400 too.
Somehow I got 4/5 in Soccer. And the other one was a neg at the top of the category! I learned this one from “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”: “Kicking the ball through a soccer defender’s legs & recovering it on the other side is this move, also the name of a spice.” IIRC, it was worth a heck of a lot more than a thousand dollars.
Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning with 6 clues left, but we saw them all. All three contestants were doing quite well. Mr. Trebek said when the next round began it was nowhere near being a runaway. Jason had gotten 6 right since the break and had 4400. You know, I’m seriously tempted to add a label to each post that has that number in it. But, you know, what for? Anyway Jennifer had gotten 4 right and had 3800. Bryan had gotten 6 right and one wrong, and had 4600.
I want to put this triple-stumper on the poll, in Nuclear Energy (I didn’t get it): “This independent agency of the U.S. government licenses & oversees the construction of reactors.”
The next clue was the Daily Double, in the same category. Jason had been in control of the board. He had 7200 after getting 4 right in the round so far. Jennifer and Bryan still had 3800 and 4600, respectively. Jason wagered 5000 on this clue: “The U.S. leads the world in operating nuclear reactors with 104, followed by this European country with 58.” Jason’s confident wager was appropriate: he got this one right. I got this one too and somehow went 4/5 in the category.
I got this triple-stumper in Oscar-winning Actresses and wound up sweeping the category: “She won a supporting actress Oscar for her turn as the sassy Minny Jackson in ‘The Help.'”
Then I got this triple-stumper in “Four” Letter Words: “‘Bathroom’ term for a person who makes false or pretentious claims.”
Then I got this triple-stumper in World Authors: “This ‘Thorn Birds’ author established the department of neurophysiology at a hospital in Sydney, Australia.”
Okay, this is the last one I got, in Supreme Court Justices: “A Reagan appointee, he has the most children of any justice on the current court with 9.”
There was one more triple-stumper before Jason found the Daily Double, also in Supreme Court Justices. He’d gotten 4 right and one wrong since the last Daily Double, and had 14200. Jennifer did well in Oscar-winning Actresses, and had gotten 6 right. She had 11400. Bryan had gotten one right and one wrong and had 3000. Jason wagered 2000 on this clue: “After World War I this justice headed a delegation of American Zionists to a conference in London.” Jason got it right, and Mr. Trebek then announced there was less than a minute left with 7 clues remaining. Three were left covered. Bryan got 2 right and ended the round with 4600. Jennifer got one right and had 13000. Jason had gotten one right also, and had 17000.
The Final Jeopardy category was American Icons. This was the clue: “He has a Medal of Freedom, a Pulitzer citation & membership in the Rock & Roll Hall & Minnesota Music Halls of Fame.” I got this one instantly and tossed my pen down upon seeing “Minnesota.” Look, I answered a clue about this guy in my own game! But hey, “Prince” did not seem like a bad guess to me. That’s what Jennifer and Jason both said. Bryan lost all but 10 dollars. Jennifer lost 3800, and Jason lost 10000! Too much!
I was at dinner tonight when a waitress told me she thought of me today because she saw some Jeopardy! It took me a minute to place her but it came to me eventually – she was a student at my workplace this summer or spring. Anyway I said immediately, “Don’t tell me what happened!” because I hadn’t seen the show yet. I wasn’t expecting Jason to lose, I’ll tell you that. It just felt like a foregone conclusion that he was gonna win. And I actually liked this guy. My own Coryat was 32600; 33600 without 2 negs.
I suppose technically there’s no reason to post the ToC list here, since apparently a champ’s consolation prize money doesn’t count toward his standing. But here it is again anyway.
