The Next Blog Post Alphabetically…

Colleen McCormick and Steve Van Noord are your challengers today to Kathy Wright, who picked up nearly $40,000 yesterday on her first appearance. How will everyone do?

THE METER IS RUNNING, MAKES SENSE–MOVIES EDITION, LEFTOVERS, ANIMAL LOGOS, “WED” BLISS, THE NEXT STATE CAPITAL ALPHABETICALLY

Colleen seemed to take time to select categories at the start of the game, but I also found her to be very enthusiastic. I enjoyed watching her play the game today!

It was a very close game all the way through the J! round; all 3 of our contestants today had no problem ringing in and giving some answers.

MAKES SENSE–MOVIES EDITION played well, though Alex was very disappointed on the Triple Stumper at $400: Many residents of Rock Ridge in “Blazing Saddles” have the surname Johnson, & this character owns an ice cream shop. Even though it was wrong, I liked Colleen’s guess, even though Alex was aghast that it fell for a Triple Stumper.

Kathy’s grandparents were booksellers in Victoria, British Columbia — it’s always nice to see contestants with ties to Canada.

After great difficulty by everyone in the first three clues in THE NEXT STATE CAPITAL ALPHABETICALLY, Colleen saw the round’s Daily Double under $800, on the round’s penultimate clue. Colleen had $3,200, to Steve’s $4,600 and Kathy’s $5,200. Colleen eventually decided on betting clue value, and saw the following clue: After Montgomery. Much like most of the rest of the category, she was unable to come up with an answer, and her score fell by that $800.

The scores at the end of the J! round saw Steve $5,600, Kathy $5,200, Colleen $2,400

DJ! round categories: PUP-PARAZZI, THE CRUSADES, UPDATING THE NOVEL, VERB-AL NAMES, AMERICAN BALLET, “Q”LINARY TERMS

The Daily Doubles came out quickly: Colleen got to the round’s first Daily Double on the 5th clue of the round, under THE CRUSADES $800. Colleen held $4,400 to Steve’s $5,600 and Kathy’s $6,000. Being an $800 clue here I might have been inclined to bet more, but Colleen chose to tie for the lead on a correct answer with a $1600 bet. Her clue: The 1098 discovery of the spear-like weapon that reputedly pierced Jesus’ side, the holy this, inspired the Crusaders. Her correct answer tied her for the lead with $6,000.

After going through VERBAL NAMES and the rest of CRUSADES, all 3 contestants had some good gets prior to the next Daily Double, under COMPLETING THE NOVEL $1600 once Colleen returned to that category. Midway through the round, Colleen had $10,000, while Steve and Kathy were tied with $9,200. Colleen bet $2,000 and saw the following clue: Mr. Toad’s “shiny new motor-car” isn’t new enough: Toad’s off to Lexus’ “December To Remember” sales event. Her correct answer brought her to $v.

Throughout the rest of the round, Kathy and Colleen took over a little more as they battled for the lead going into Final Jeopardy. On the game’s final clue, Colleen took the lead just as the end-of-round signal came.

Scores going into FJ:
Colleen $15,600
Kathy $14,800
Steve $8,400

FJ category: POLITICAL TERMS

FJ clue: 19th C. reports on horse races used this 2-word term to mean horses that were in the field but didn’t finish high

Steve $8,400 – $400 = $8,000
Kathy $14,800 + $6,000 = $20,800
Colleen $15,600 – $14,801 = $799

Kathy’s now a 2-day champion, and both she and Jeanie will be back tomorrow! I’m disappointed that Colleen lost.

My Coryat today was $23,800 (31 right).
