Summer Hiatus Challenge 2012, Week 1 Day 1 (#shc2012)

Andy here this morning with a recap of Day 1 of the Summer Hiatus Challenge! But first, of course, yesterday’s quick Kids Week Day 3 recap…

FJ! category: BRITISH SCIENTISTS
FJ! clue: In 1859 a theory was born when he wrote, “from so simple a beginning endless forms…have been, and are being, evolved”

Andrew Grace 7400 – 6999 = 401
Partha Purushotham 9200 + 9000 = 18200
Julia Martinez 25800 + 1000 = 26800

The first day of the SHC is in the books, here are the questions and selected scores!

WORDS FROM JAPANESE
2: The name for this type of couch that can fold down into a bed comes from a Japanese word meaning “round quilt.”
4: This type of transportation takes its name from a Japanese word meaning “human powered.”
6: This Japanese “empty orchestra” uses a machine to provide accompaniment to singers.
8: This word for a powerful businessman comes from a Japanese word meaning “Great Prince” that was often applied to Shoguns.
10: Literally “squad leader,” this word has come to refer in English to someone at the head of an organization.

A WORLD OF WOMEN WRITERS

3: The first book published by this group of writing sisters was the 1846 collection “Poems by Curren, Ellis, and Acton Bell.”
6: This country is home to Isabelle Allende and Nobel Prize winner Gabriella Mistral.
9: After losing a leg in a stage accident, this “divine” French actress wrote “The Art of the Theater” and, in 1907, a memoir called “My Double Life.”
12: Barbara Tuchman’s first nonfiction Pulitzer Prize was for this book describing the first month of World War I.
15: In 1622, Pope Gregory XV canonized this Spanish Carmelite mystic from Avila who wrote “Interior Castle” and “The Way of Perfection.”

Personally, I probably play the SHC too conservatively, but I’m still in the “trying very hard not to neg” mode. I definitely have better categories, but some worse ones come up for me in future days, as you’ll see! If I keep going, I’ll eventually get past the people that don’t play every day, right?

Selected scores (as more people get back to Jeanie, we’ll add to this list!)
