Andy here with the recap of the October 12 Jeopardy!
Tonight’s challengers for Stephanie Jass are Jennifer Hughs and Matt Bibb. Can Stephanie become a 5-time champ?
J! round categories: BUFFETT TALKS BUSINESS, GEOG. DICT. ABBREV., A POSITION OF IMPORTANCE, ODD NAMINGS, NORTH AMERICAN LANGUAGES, A HOT LATIN NUMBER
The early part of the game saw Stephanie and Matt trading correct responses on the first few clues.
To be honest, I’m surprised Stephanie wasn’t asked for a “be more specific” on NORTH AMERICAN LANGUAGE $800: Nunavut means “our land” in the language of these people. As far as my knowledge of the topic goes, her response wasn’t technically incorrect, just not specific enough. Not sure if a “be more specific” would have gotten her to the correct response, but I do think she should have been given the chance!
Also, the $1,000 clue in A POSITION OF IMPORTANCE is technically incorrect: In Major League Baseball, when the ball is put in play only this player may be in foul territory. As far as I can tell by my interpretation of the rulebook, a first baseman may be in foul territory as well if he is holding a runner on first base! That said, the clue did give Jennifer her first correct response of the game. Your scores at the end of 15:
Stephanie $5,000
Matt $2,200
Jennifer $1,000
Stephanie is starting to grow on me as a contestant; corny puns help! Apparently Stephanie’s husband (last name Baker) was the 13th online date Stephanie went on (yes, “baker’s dozen” got said on-air). Considering I’ve been on dates with seven people I’ve met on online dating sites, there’s still hope for me yet!
Sigh. The BUFFETT category is delivered by Warren Buffett. Double sigh. The Daily Double was at $400 in that category. Matt saw it first, with the scores:
Stephanie $5,600
Matt $3,000
Jennifer $1,000
There really is only one bet here to make, in my opinion ($3,000). It’s a $400 level clue, there’s a ton of time to make up a loss, and it’ll take the lead. Thankfully, Matt went in that direction. His clue: If you understand a particular industry, put more capital into the companies you believe in; don’t bother with this strategy of putting eggs in different baskets. His correct response doubled his score and put him at $6,000.
Needless to say, the Buffett category being taken led to 7 clues remaining at the “less than a minute to go” signal; 2 questions were left on the board, with scores as follows:
Stephanie $6,600
Matt $5,800
Jennifer $2,200
DJ! round categories: COMPLETELY BASSLESS, RUMORS, MEASURING DEVICES, THE EDICT OF NANCY, PREHISTORIC TIMES, THE LAST “DROP”.
Jennifer came out like gangbusters in THE LAST “DROP”, getting herself back into the game, but Stephanie did well for herslf in COMPLETELY BASSLESS to retake an advantage along with Matt. It was Stephanie who found the Daily Double under RUMOURS, though, at the $1,600 level. Scores:
Stephanie $12,200
Matt $11,000
Jennifer $5,000
As she is wont to do, her bet was just $2,000. her clue: This mischievous Shakespeare character says “I jest to Oberon…and sometime lurk I in a gossip’s bowl”
Matt had some costly mistakes midway through Double Jeopardy!, leaving Stephanie very close to a lock game! She got to the final Daily Double at PHREHISTORIC TIMES $1600. Scores:
Stephanie $15,400
Matt $8,200
Jennifer $6,600
Her standard bet of $2,000 would work really well here! However, she made the bet of just $1,000. Her clue: During the Chalcolithic period, 4,000-6,000 years ago, this metal became the first used for tools and weapons. Her response was incorrect, dropping her to $14,400.
Scores going into Final Jeopardy!
Stephanie $14,400
Matt $8,200
Jennifer $6,600
FJ! category: OSCAR NOMINEES
FJ! clue: One of his first Oscar nominations was for Best Actor; none of his 22 other Oscar nominations was for acting
Jennifer 6600 – 2201 = 4399
Matt 8200 – 8199 = 1
Stephanie 14400 – 5600 = 8800
I’m left scratching my head at these wagers, for sure! Not what I would have done in this position (though I suppose some of you out there might be able to defend them!
Stephanie’s a 5-day champion though at $98,970! I’ll be back Monday with her 6th game!
