I just got done taking the online test, for fun of course. I got 40 right! Anyone else take it tonight?
     Today’s contestants:

Ashok Poozhikunnel of Wheaton IL
Brett Swartz of Athens GA

Kristin Morgan of Huntsville AL (She’s not wearing the necklace in her Hometown Howdy!)

I doubt I’d have gotten this early one right in Superstars of Science had it not been for a clue in the 4-7 rerun above (400 in Discoveries): “In the 1660s, with Cambridge closed by plague, he went home & started inventing calculus.” Ashok got this one.
I’d never heard of this in Thanks to Our “Vet”s; have you?: “Catlike critter prized for its musk.” Kristin got this one.
Poor Ashok looked like he was having trouble ringing in, from the beginning. It seemed like Kristin was dominating, but she and Ashok were tied at the first break with 1800. She’d gotten 8 right and 2 wrong, and he’d gotten 4 right. Brett got on the board with the last clue before the first break, and had 1000.
I didn’t notice til Brett’s interview that he does look an awful lot like Mr. Trebek.
Ashok came out swinging then and got 3 right. Then came the get of the day, which goes to Brett, in TV News: “In 2012 she succeeded Ann Curry as co-anchor of The ‘Today’ Show.”
This was my own get of the day, in U.S. Place Names: “The U.S. has 110 hospitals named for this helpful New Testament fella from Luke 10.” I work at one of those 110 hospitals. 😉 I followed that up with this triple-stumper in the same category: “No shortage of U.S. islands called this; there are 162 besides the one that’s home to Queens & Massapequa.”
I was befuddled by this clue, still in U.S. Place Names: “This Idaho ski resort was developed by the Union Pacific railroad, and named by a press agent who brought Hollywood stars to popularize the area.” Didn’t we just see a clue about this last week? Unfortunately, this game was on a Thursday, and the archive‘s notoriously slow about posting Thursday episodes. And Ashok even played in that game, but it was a triple-stumper today.
Ashok found the Daily Double of the Jeopardy round, still in U.S. Place Names. Somehow he was in the lead. He’d gotten 5 right and one wrong since the break, and had 4200. Kristin had gotten 3 right and had 2800. Brett had gotten 2 right and had 2400. Ashok wagered 4000 on this clue: “Warm Springs, Georgia’s airport is named for him.” I knew this one cold, but Ashok got it wrong. Ashok did get the last clue of the round right though, ending it with 1200.
Kristin got the first Daily Double of Double Jeopardy, in Outlaws. We’d only seen 2 clues of the round. She’d gotten one and Ashok got the other. She had 3600, Ashok had 1600, and Brett still had 2400. Kristin wagered 1400 on this video clue:

“The Younger brothers, standing, formed an outlaw alliance with these brothers, seated in the photo here.”

This picture wasn’t necessary. Kristin did get this right. She got the next 2 clues right too, then came another Daily Double in The London Stage. She had 6200 then, while Ashok and Brett still had 1600 and 2400 respectively. Kristin wagered 800 on this clue: “In summer 2012 this play based on a movie about 2 British athletes at the 1924 Olympics was off & running.” She got it right. For some reason, Mr. Trebek felt it necessary to say, “Don’t feel upset with yourself for only wagering the 800. It’s all right.”
After this, Brett and Ashok both got 7 right, and Ashok also got one wrong. Brett ended the round with 12800, and Ashok 6400. Kristin had gotten 5 right and 2 wrong and had 9800. How would you have wagered? If I were Brett, I suppose I’d wager 6800 or 6801. If I were Kristin, I think I’d wager 3800. If I were Ashok, I might have wagered nothing.
The Final Jeopardy category was Capital Cities. This was the clue: “These 2 world capitals are separated by only 250 miles of land & less than 1 degree of latitude, at 59 degrees 17′ & 59 degrees 57; N.” Sure. I didn’t have a prayer here, and I picked two South American capitals. This was a triple-stumper. Ashok lost it all. Kristin lost 3100. ? Brett lost 8000, making Kristin the new champion. So as it turns out, Ashok would’ve needed a correct response in the Final anyway. At least he’ll make the ToC, probably. I hope he’s continuing to study quiz bowl questions!
Every now and then I remember it’s not a crime to just watch the show and not keep track of my Coryats, especially now that I’m off the hook with an acquaintance with whom I used to compare results daily. So today I just ate dinner while I watched. I didn’t get up til 6:15 today, at least two hours later than usual. As a result I didn’t answer this tweeted clue in time, despite knowing instantly the answer.
