A good match spoiled, plus Q & A with Allison Swanberg

One season 25 Coryat, from the episode originally airing 5-7-09: 32400 (34400 without negs, all 3 in the Jeopardy round). I’ve accepted “Communists” for “Mao Tse-Tung.” It was the first clue picked in the category.
Here are the contestants for the third quarterfinal of the Teen Tournament!

Arjun Byju of Sarasota FL
Olivia Hummer of Covina CA

William Crouch of Warner Robins GA

Strange; I notice when I go to Jeopardy!‘s website that they have some other kid, not Olivia, competing against Arjun and William. Anyway when I first saw the complete list of contestants I knew I’d be pulling for Olivia. I used to work in Covina. And I like her top today, by the way.
William got the first 4 clues right, all in It’s Elemental. Then I got this triple-stumper in the category. I did a report on the element when I was a kid, but this was still a guess: “The hair of Otzi the Iceman showed high levels of this poisonous element, No. 33, but that’s not what killed him.” William went for the sweep but negged.
I swept Disney Movies by Villain, but I sure didn’t know this tweeted clue from that category.
At the break, William had gotten 7 right and the one wrong, and had 2800. Olivia had gotten 2 right and had 1200. Arjun had gotten 3 right and had 1400.
How cool that Arjun was on Made.
Olivia found the Daily Double in Homecoming. She’d gotten the one right since the break and had 1600. William had gotten one right too, and had 3000. Arjun still had 1400. Olivia thought a long time and wagered  just 600 on this clue: “Before he had to sell it, this author enjoyed coming home to his Chateau de Monte-Cristo outside of Paris.” I knew this one instantly, but Olivia didn’t get it.
I wish I’d rung in on this triple-stumper in Mythology: “The yoke of a chariot was lashed to a pole via this, named for the man who tied it so intricately.”
Can anyone tell me how someone would pick the right Hawaiian island here, in Homecoming?: “The Lahaina historic district on this Hawaiian island was a favorite home of kings and chiefs.”
At the end of the round, Arjun had gotten 3 right since the Daily Double and had 3400. William had gotten 5 right and 2 wrong, and had 4200. Olivia had gotten 2 right and had 2200.
Olivia found the first Daily Double three clues in. She and William had each gotten one right in the round. She had 3000 then and William had 4600. Olivia wagered just 1000 on this clue in “Y” is the Only Vowel: “An ancient traditional story of a people.” She and I got it! I swept the category. And like yesterday, there’s a weird connection between today’s episode and the 5-7 rerun above. And like yesterday, I watched the rerun after the day’s episode. Here’s the 5-7 clue, in Only One Vowel: “Matthew 2:11 mentions this 5-letter aromatic gum resin that has only one vowel.” I got it right.
I cracked up when I said the wrong half of “Talk Soup” on this one in TV Show Sum-Up: “Joel McHale e!lucidates clip art.” Yes, the exclamation point is supposed to be there. The clue was a triple-stumper. Remember this?
I was pretty happy about The 113th Congress. (Remember this?) I got all but this one, and wouldn’t have if given all day and only brainpower: “This consumer advocate is the first female senator from Massachusetts.” Look what happened when I tried to take the picture without unplugging my phone:

     Here’s a better view:

I was impressed that anyone got this. Arjun did.
I got this triple-stumper in American Novelists: “‘I never get scared,’ says this author of the ‘Fear Street’ books.” This was a little after my time but before theirs. I’m not too surprised they didn’t know it. I was way surprised they didn’t know this one though, in the same category: “This author called his 1966 masterpiece ‘In Cold Blood’ a ‘nonfiction novel.'”
The last clue on the board was the Daily Double, in World Rivers. William found it. He had gotten 6 right and one wrong since the first Daily Double of the round, and had 10600. Arjun had gotten 6 right and one wrong, and had 7400. Olivia had gotten 8 right and had 14400! William wagered 3000 on this clue: “This river that rises in the Black Forest flows through Germany & on into Austria.” I’ve been to the Black Forest but I don’t believe I’ve seen this river. So I didn’t get this one. William did, though.
The Final Jeopardy category is The Planets. And here’s today’s bummer: I read this mention before watching today’s show. And I was not amused. It’s not exactly a spoiler, but it’s a lot worse than not knowing anything about the show going into it. An honest accident is one thing. Or if the person who hadn’t seen the show was being reckless. But come on people. Ask if the person’s seen the show before you spoil it. Please. It’s not even hard!
This was the clue: “To the ancient Greeks & Romans, it was the slowest-moving planet seen from Earth.” Even without the tweet, I wouldn’t have gotten this one. Phew. This clue was a triple-stumper. Arjun lost 2600. William lost 2800. Olivia lost 6600 – too much! So we’ll see William in the semifinals.
Here’s the list of Teen contestants who’ve played, for the sake of following the wild card race:

Nilai Sarda (win)
William Crouch (win)
Irene Vazquez ($15000)
Katie Stone ($13800)
Olivia Hummer ($7800)

My Coryat today was 30000; 35000 without negs.
Now for Q & A with Tuesday‘s Allison Swanberg. Thanks, Allison!

Q: I found you through this site, and you mentioned your engagement in your contestant interview!
A: Oh man, I forget that the wedding site is still up sometimes!
Q: I thought “George R.R. Martin” and “Elizabethtown” were really good gets.
A: Thanks for the kudos on the two questions you mentioned – I was very proud of the “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter” one myself 🙂
Q: How did you decide on your Final Jeopardy response and wager?
A: When it came to Final Jeopardy, I had a hard time with the wager. I knew the category wasn’t a super- strong one for me, and since Josh had been betting low throughout the game, thought it was safer to go lower. Also, the time to figure out the wager went so fast, that frankly, after going back and forth in my head, I finally said ‘aw, hell why not’ and just went with 3500. Same thing when the final answer came up – I thought it was something with wind, but for some reason, the MOST OBVIOUS WIND ANSWER didn’t occur to me. *sigh* Oh well, I had a great time during the whole filming and everything and got to experience something that hardly anyone else does.
