I heard from Ilene after yesterday’s game where she made a convincing defense of her wager from yesterday, which, in a way, led me towards an interesting breakthrough in terms of wagering strategy! Once I have everything worked out, and confirm the math again, I will be putting the conclusions here!
On to the game at hand from last night: Lorraine Donahue and Jon Gucinski are the challengers to Drew Horwood.
You know Alex is at a loss for things to say when he comments on inane things like “the champion has come from the center position the last two days”.

WASHINGTON, D.C. SCULPTURE
WASHINGTON, D.C. SCULPTURE had the first Daily Double, on the second clue of the game. Of course, if you remember Monday and Tuesday, we have seen DD bets of 400, 400, 1000, 1000, 500, and 1000. Drew got to play it after getting the opening clue, and bet just $200.
I am not enjoying this.
His clue: 73 years after his death, a statue of this musician was unveiled outside the band hall at the Marine Barracks.
Of course, Drew got it, and went all the way to $400! “True Daily Double that paid off handsomely”, Alex said, the sarcasm evident in his voice. And I agree.
At the end of 15, the scores were:
Jon plays in a men’s hockey league, and has led the league in penalty minutes the past 4-5 seasons! Drew admitted to once refereeing a Jello wrestling tournament. He said it was because he was the only one who had a whistle.
Still a very close game with none of the three players seeming to have significant buzzer difficulty! At the end of 30 clues, the scores were:

After a Triple Stumper on QUOTES FILLED WITH BOOZE $1600 (Before lapsing into a coma, this Welsh poet supposedly said “I’ve had 18 straight whiskies; I think that’s the record”), Lorraine got to play the Daily Double at $2000! The scores were:
She chose to bet $2,000 — which, sadly, is the highest bet so far this week!
Her clue: The title character of this Eugene O’Neill play says “Gimme a whiskey –ginger ale on the side. And don’t be stingy, baby”. She was unable to come up with the answer, and fell to $5,000. I would have confidently said “The Iceman Cometh” on this one and been shocked! Whoops!
Another Triple Stumper (KNOW YOUR AREA CODES $1200): For Buffalo dial 716; for this city of 2.6 million 100 miles away, dial 416. I certainly hope you got this one too, Jeanie!
The final Daily Double was found, unsurprisingly, under WONKY LEAKS $1200. Lorraine got to play it There were 2 clues left ($1600 and $2000), and the scores were:
Lorraine bet $2,500. I wonder what Watson would have done. I don’t think it would have been that. I give up.
Her clue: In 1774 he became a past postmaster after leaking letters from British loyalist Thomas Hutchinson. More consternation and blankness from Lorraine, and her score fell below Jon’s at $9,300.
Drew got the $1600 clue to take the lead, and $2000 was a Triple Stumper.
Scores going into FJ!:
FJ! category: U.S. HISTORY
FJ! clue: Congress has passed 11 of these: the first in 1812, the last in 1942
Lorraine 9300 + 8500 = 17800
Jon 9600 + 9001 = 18601
Drew 9800 + 9401 = 19201
No qualms with these bets here!
Jeanie’s got tomorrow’s recap. Drew is a 2-day champion with $36,199!
