My Coryat from the weekend rerun, which originally aired 7-3-13: 25400 (29400 without negs). The first time I played, my score was 19800 (24600 without negs)!
So Fidelito Cortes won his second episode yesterday. I do like updating the ToC list. Will it happen?

I started watching this episode feeling like I’d rather lay down than watch the show (I worked overnight last night), but even though I wouldn’t be publishing til 10:30 Thursday I didn’t want to wait to blog. It’s a powerful motivator! I have to admit I also want to stay awake in case my buddy from work calls and wants to go out to dinner. I’d stay up forever for that. That’s how good her company is. As if I need more, I’m also eager to read the thread on this episode over at jboard. And I don’t like to do that until after I’ve blogged.
Mr. Trebek advised Damian and Kathy that Fidelito starts slow and picks up speed later in the game (as if they hadn’t seen him from the audience). My friend at work noticed it too, but I hadn’t really!
I didn’t know one could achieve this state after having died (in Buddhism): “A reclining Buddha with his arm supporting his head means he’s resting. If his arm is beside his head, he has passed on and is entering this peaceful state that means ‘extinguishing.'”
At the first break:
Kathy 3200 (5 right)
Damian 1400 (6 right and one wrong)
Fidelito -200 (2 right and one wrong)
Do you wonder how Damian has enough work, with his specialization in architecture being as specific as it is? And how can Fidelito say the name of his book but I wouldn’t have been able to give my blog URL?
Fidelito found the Daily Double of the round, in Red-dy. Mr. Trebek had given the one-minute warning, and there were 3 clues left on the board after this one.
Kathy 4200 (One right)
Damian 2000 (2 right and one wrong)
Fidelito 4200 (8 right)
Fidelito wagered it all (yay!) on this clue: “About 0.8% of our red blood cells are destroyed daily; if the cells aren’t replaced at the same rate, this condition results.” Fidelito and I got it right.
I really wanted to see the last clue of Tech IQ, but we didn’t get to.
Kathy 4200
Damian 2800 (One right)
Fidelito 9400 (One right)
Damian found the first Daily Double in the Double Jeopardy round, in On the Westernmost Border of…. He had just gotten a clue worth 2000 in the category, after Kathy jumped to it.
Kathy 4200 (2 right and one wrong)
Damian 8800 (7 right)
Fidelito 15400 (6 right and 3 wrong)
Damian wagered 3200 on this clue: “Egypt.” He got it right. Soon he picked up another 2000 clue in the category, one on which Fidelito negged. This guy knows his geography and his fashion, as he did pretty well in French Dressing.
Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning with six clues left. If Justice Sandra Day O’Connor read clues as slowly as she described the category of the same name, no way would we see all the clues.
I counted “rip” wrong on this one in the aptly-named Pick Up the Pace, but I’m not sure I should have: “Definitions of this verb include ‘to rend’ & ‘to rush headlong.'”
Sure enough, we only saw 2 clues in Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
Kathy 4600 (One right)
Damian 20400 (6 right)
Fidelito 13800 (One wrong)
The Final Jeopardy category was Inventors. This is the clue, and let’s all be glad I can receive pictures these days: “Last name of the man whose 1934 patent application for a tool is seen here.”
I got this instantly, and all 3 contestants got it too. Kathy doubled her score. Fidelito added 7000, and Damian added 7201, making him your new champ.
I have to admit I was shocked. I don’t understand. Why does Fidelito’s Howdy say “returning champion”? I figured that meant he was going to win clear into next week. There is another guy who says in his Howdy he’s a returning champion too, and it’s Damian. ? (I didn’t remember it was him until I watched the Howdies again after having watched this episode.)
My Coryat today was 13600 (17800 without negs). I only had 3200 in the Double Jeopardy round.
From Andy: I found the links to both of Fidelito’s collections! “Waiting For The Exterminator” and “Everyday Things”
