Kansas City, Sioux City, Cedar City, what a pity…

Andy with the first recap of the new week!

The good news: Jeanie found the Hometown Howdies for this week!

This week’s contestants:
Fidelito Cortes
Rohit Dewan
Rich Hansen
A.C. Hawley
Damian Henri
Elisabeth Houlik
Kathy Johnson
Kristan McMahon
Meredith Robinson
Cori Wilhelm

The bad news: I’m stuck watching this on my actual TV, so no pictures!

Meredith Robinson and Fidelito Cortes are the two challengers for Sarah Zucker, who won $1,799 on Friday. Let’s hope she adds to that today!

Voting has begun on the Battle of the Decades – 1980s! I have my favourites who I’ll be voting for, but in terms of the blog, I’ll be remaining neutral! You can check out the Battle of the Decades site to vote!

J! round categories:
ASSUME THE PREPOSITION
WHERE IS IT?
REJECTED SPORTS TEAM NAMES
OSCAR-NOMINATED WARNER BROS. CARTOONS
FRAGRANCES
THE BATTLESHIP U.S.S. IOWA

Sarah did well to start off in CARTOONS, she got the first 3 clues. Fidelito got the $1,000 clue to get back into the game. We also went through WHERE IS IT? and ASSUME THE PREPOSITION.

Scores at the end of 15:
Sarah $3,600
Meredith $3,400
Fidelito $1,200

Fidelito is a former speechwriter for a Philippine president “who shall remain unnamed”.

Thankfully, the Daily Double was in the non-video FRAGRANCES category; sometimes I think the producers listen to me here at the blog! $600 had it, and the scores were:

Sarah $6,400
Meredith $3,000
Fidelito $1,600

Sarah bet $3,000. Her clue: People have been obsessed by this designer’s Obsession since 1985. I got it immediately, and so did she! $9,400 is Sarah’s new score.

The rest of the round saw Fidelito do well in the USS IOWA category to claw in some of the deficit. Scores at the end of 30:

Sarah $8,800
Fidelito $4,200
Meredith $4,000

DJ! categories:
US CITY NAME ORIGINS
PICK UP THE HOMOPHONE
INVESTING
19th CENTURY BRIT LIT
ROCKET MUSIC
HEY, LAD-“E”

BRIT LIT $2000 had the Daily Double, and it was Fidelito’s to play, just after he took the lead from Sarah on the $1600 clue! Scores were:

Fidelito $8,600
Sarah $8,400
Meredith $4,800

Fidelito bet $4,400. His clue: Amy is the real name of this Dickens title character who was born in the Marshalsea Debtor’s Prison. Fidelito gave the correct response and his score moved up to $13,000! I’m quite happy with the wagering size in this game, for sure! We have players willing to take chances!

Moving on, Meredith seemed to have some problems getting very close, but just wrong enough to be negged on clues. Fidelito seemed to be blanking after ringing in, which was enough to keep Sarah in the game!

The final Daily Double came at the bottom of US CITY NAME ORIGINS. It was Sarah’s to play, with scores of:

Fidelito $21,400
Sarah $14,000
Meredith $4,800

Sarah bet $7,000. Her clue: Once called Buffalo City, this Wild West Kansas town was named for the commander of the nearby fort. The famed 19th-century lady-of-the-evening Squirrel Tooth Alice, now of restaurant fame, was from Dodge City. Sarah went for Topeka, and her score fell to $7,000 as the end-of-round signal played.

Scores going into Final:

Fidelito $21,400
Sarah $7,000
Meredith $4,800

FJ! category: MOUNT RUSHMORE

FJ! clue: 2 of the 4 men on Mount Rushmore were born in Virginia; these 2 states were the birthplaces of the other 2 men

Meredith 4800 + 3000 = 7800
Sarah 7000 – 2601 = 4399
Fidelito 21400 – 1400 = 20000

Fidelito is champion with $20,000; he’ll be back tomorrow to defend! See you then!
