Quick Recap & Final Jeopardy – January 26, 2016

The first of three days of online testing is today! Make sure you sign up and become the next Jeopardy! champ!

Meanwhile, voting is on until Sunday afternoon for the TJ!F Andy Awards, honoring the best of 2015! Over 150 ballots have been cast!

Meanwhile, for some reason I was looking up the reaction to Fred on Twitter; it seems like a very strong majority of the reaction is positive towards him, and I’m glad to see that! If things keep going well for him, I have a feeling that Fred might be up for one or two of the 2016 Andy Awards!

Today’s contestants:

Gerry Matatics, a speaker & writer from Scranton, PA
Sonam Shah, a healthcare consultant from Greenville, SC
Fred Vaughn, an Internet operations technician from Mineral Point, WI (2-day total: $36,300)

Scores going into Final Jeopardy:
Fred $20,800
Sonam $16,200
Gerry $8,600

Final Jeopardy! category: 20TH CENTURY AMERICA

Final Jeopardy! clue: The 1970 follow-up line “We’ve had a main B bus undervolt” was addressed to a listener in this city

What is Houston?

Gerry 8600 – 8598 = 2 (no answer)
Sonam 16200 – 12201 = 3999 (Philadelphia)
Fred 20800 – 7500 = 13300 (Los Angeles) (3-day total: $49,600)

(It was the follow-up line to “…we’ve had a problem.” That was a forehead-slapper of a miss on my part. Not that I’ve watched “Apollo 13”, but did they say this line in the film?

Meanwhile, Fred gets on the ToC Tracker page in the morning, and I hope he doesn’t mind this shade, but DUDE. You’re playing with fire!

I’m trying to figure out where Sonam was going with her number as well.

  1. That line was definitely in the movie. When I read it, I heard it in Tom Hanks voice. “Houston, we have a problem” starts at 1:20 in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAmsi05P9Uw

  2. Fred got the question about caravaning correct but was not given credit for a correct response. In Europe a caravan is a camper not a “mobile home” as Alex said. Fred said it was an RV so he needs to be given credit for his answer.

  3. I agree with Schneider, RV was an acceptable answer and they got it wrong. For shame. Interesting episode.

Really? “For shame”? No. Fred won the game anyway – and I’m sure there’s a really good reason why his answer here wasn’t accepted (I haven’t re-watched yet to check this point).

  4. Water under the bridge re: the caravan question. And I already acknowledge that I’ve dodged bunches of self-inflicteds up to this point… but I’ve had fun with it so far, sooooo…

  5. WOW! I can’t believe nobody got Final Jeopardy. That was a famous moment in American history.

And yes, RV should have been accepted for a caravan in England.

There are a lot of pretty famous moments in American history from that timeframe. I didn’t get it either, so I’m not going to begrudge anyone who missed it. It was gettable but difficult and you weren’t going to get it if you end up going down the wrong path.
