Contestant To Philadelphia: I’m Sorry

Sometimes, nerves can get you on the Jeopardy! set.

After contestant Damien Shirley said “William Pitt” to a video Daily Double about the person whose visage appears at the top of Philadelphia’s City Hall, the City of Brotherly Love was none too impressed.

However, as The Jeopardy! Fan suspected, it was nerves and a simple accidental utterance of the wrong response.

Damien took to Twitter this afternoon to apologize to Philadephia:

While Damien finished the episode in third place, The Jeopardy! Fan hopes he enjoyed the experience of being a contestant!

Remember, if you think you can do better, online testing is October 4, 5, and 6! Go to and sign up!

My wife and I were shaking our heads, mouths agape, after that response. Two big cities in PENNsylvania, one of them named PITTSburgh and the OTHER – the subject of the clue – named Philadelphia. Could he possibly think Philadelphia was named after William Pitt??? 😉😉 Wonder whom Pittsburgh is named after?
Full disclosure – I grew up in Philadelphia and once Maggie Speak learned that, throughout my audition, interview and Jeopardy run, she just called me “Philly”. 😉
    Love that woman…..

OK, OK. I just reread that and it sounds colder than I meant it to be. Damien tried his best I’m sure.
On one of my shows I announced that the current queen of England was Elizabeth I. OMG. Just goes to show you what that show will do to you!!

Thanks for the clarification! The lights do weird things. (Also: I think the fact that he was starting into a second “what is” was the biggest evidence of his realizing his error very early on.)
