The island of Phuket was one of the hardest hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, as the western coast of Thailand is located just over 300 miles from the earthquake’s epicentre. It took just two hours to reach the island, striking the island’s west coast, flooding, and causing major damage to most of the island’s beaches.
Things were more severe in other islands like Khao Lak, as Phuket may have been aided by a number of high-rise hotels, owing to its being a tourist hotbed.
An article at the BBC from the five-year anniversary describes how quickly things have recovered.
