Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 20th Century Novels) for Tuesday, October 10, 2017 (Season 34, Episode 22):
The protagonist of this novel “was fairly sure that his age was 39, and he believed that he had been born in 1944 or 1945”
Programming note: Due to the New Jersey gubernatorial debate, tonight’s Jeopardy! episode will air on WABC New York at 2:07 AM and on WPVI Philadelphia at 1:07 AM.

Today’s contestants:
Sarah Favorite, a graduate student & health data specialist from Williston, North Dakota![]() |
Chris Cardinal, a software entrepreneur from Phoenix, Arizona![]() |
Austin Rogers, a bartender from New York, New York (10-day total: $365,400)![]() |
What is 1984?
The relevant quote, as referring to Winston Smith early in George Orwell’s work:
He sat back. A sense of complete helplessness had descended upon him. To begin with, he did not know with any certainty that this was 1984. It must be round about that date, since he was fairly sure that his age was thirty-nine, and he believed that he had been born in 1944 or 1945; but it was never possible nowadays to pin down any date within a year or two.
Playing along with this clue at home, my thought process was definitely “1944 or 1945 plus 39, what’s a book set in 1984? Oh. Yeah.”

Has to be one of the easiest FJs ever…if you can add, you’re in.
I’m loath to describe any Final as “easiest”, as, to be honest, Jim, there are other novels set in or around that year.
True, but not too many are titled “1984”.
For the record, I’m not criticizing anyone by pointing out today’s FJ is easy. It just is.
Thanks for the heads up about tonight’s NY pre-emption. I usually watch on DVR, so I would have missed it. Re-programming now!
Did this just after I woke up. “Huh, what’s a novel that would be set in the mid-nineties?”
New rule: shower and breakfast first.
What is “The Bridges of Madison County”? 😉
If it was going to be another book instead of 1984, the clue would have been something else.
I believe Alex called him Austin Rivers? Twice?!
He just corrected himself abt Austin Rivers…I have said Austin Powers a couple times, we’re all human😃
Alex definitely seemed off his game tonight.
Mr. Trebek is probably mentally exhausted at this point…I don’t blame him. He’s a legend though, and is handling the situation with the great aplomb he’s always displayed. I’m in awe.
What has it been 10, 11 games? Alex Trebek should win 10 Emmys next year…he’s definitely earned it.
Same here, except I’ve confused him for Austin Jackson. Just my luck that he happens to play for an MLB team currently in the playoffs.
I skipped the math and thought “a protagonist around 40 in the mid-80’s” and came up with The World According to Garp. Shortcuts can be a killer sometimes.
