Who is Philippe Pétain?
Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, including Austin Rogers, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

Philippe Pétain, during World War I, became a national hero at the Battle of Verdun, and after the war was made a Marshal of France. Unfortunately, during World War II, Pétain became installed as an authoritarian head of Vichy France, which collaborated with Nazi Germany. Seen as the French equivalent of Norway’s Quisling after the war, he was sentenced to death after being convicted of treason, but his sentence was commuted to life in light of his advanced age and his World War I heroics.

In memory of Cindy Stowell, I’ll be donating $2 to the Cancer Research Institute for every item sold in November from our store!. Here are our top sellers; all prices are in US dollars!

  1. It was ironically Gen. de Gaulle who commuted Marshal Petain’s death sentence to life imprisonment in 1945. Petain five years earlier had sentenced Charles de Gaulle to death for treason in absentia, de Gaulle having escaped to England after the French army had been defeated by Nazi Germany. Quasi-independent Vichy France lasted only until November of 1942 when American and British armies landed in French North Africa and the Germans responded by occupying all of France down to the Mediterranean coast as Petain predicted they would.

Austin has excelled on FJs, but he might have trouble accumulating large totals during the first two rounds. Alan has demonstrated the deepest TOC-level knowledge among the finalists. But I worry that the stress might eventually get to him. I think Buzzy has the best balance of knowledge and confidence, so he’s my pick. Can’t wait to see what happens!
