Correct response: What is isthmus?

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, including Austin Rogers, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

The geographic term “isthmus” is essentially a narrow piece of land across water that connects two larger areas (that they’d otherwise be separated from). A more famous one than the one of Tehuantepec (in Mexico) is the isthmus of Panama.

The more interesting story is the red herring in the clue, the reference to the McLane-Ocampo Treaty of 1859. The U.S. wished control over a crucial transit point between the Caribbean and the Pacific, and the Benito Juarez government was broke and needed the money. The treaty would have given the U.S. free movement of goods, military effects, and even possibly troops through that area. However, even though President Buchanan was greatly in favor, the treaty was never ratified by the U.S. Senate, as the Northern majority in the Senate worried that it would be possibly used to improve the South’s position, as this was in the buildup to the Civil War.
