Correct response: Who is Christopher Marlowe?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
A contemporary of Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe (also known as Kit Marlowe) was a major Elizabethan playwright and was a great influence on Shakespeare. In 1593, Marlowe was accused of holding treasonous opinions, and after the “Dutch church libel” was published (which contained several allusions to Marlowe’s plays), Marlowe was arrested. While awaiting his trial at the Privy Council, Marlowe was killed under mysterious circumstances ten days later in an altercation with Ingram Frizer.
Shakespeare’s As You Like It provides the most famous tribute to Marlowe, where Marlowe’s Hero and Leander was quoted, as well as the “a great reckoning in a little room” line referred to in today’s clue.

Methodology: https://thejeopardyfan.com/2019/04/jeopardy-predictions-updated-methods.html
Tournament of Champions projections:
With a projected 69 regular-play games to go prior to the Tournament of Champions cutoff, after 500,000 simulations, our model shows:
An average of 2.1568 5+-time champions (standard deviation 1.1836).
An average of 3.7189 4+-time champions (standard deviation 1.4397).
An early cutoff took place 0.391% of the time (or a 5-game winner will be left out).
Emma Boettcher qualified 45.564% of the time.
Eric R. Backes qualified 84.074% of the time.
Anneke Garcia qualified 57.753% of the time.
Lindsey Shultz qualified 24.059% of the time.
Dave Leffler qualified 4.468% of the time.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Emma’s $46,801 is the sixth-highest first-game winning total in regular play of all time. (Thank you to those who have contacted me with a correction.)
- The Combined Coryat score for the game of $53,200 is an all-time regular-play record.
- James has been correct on his last 27 Final Jeopardy! clues.
- According to the prediction model, a score of $23,400 going into Final Jeopardy wins 86.868% of the time.
- Given James’ mean average score going into Final Jeopardy of $47,655 and standard deviation of $13,422, the chances of James having a score of $23,400 or worse going into Final Jeopardy are about 1 in 30.
- There was absolutely nothing wrong with James’ Final Jeopardy bet of $1,399. He knew that Emma was overwhelmingly likely to bet what she did and, thus, his only chance of winning was if Emma did not get Final Jeopardy! correct. $1,399 ensures that his score stays above Jay’s and gives James the best chance of winning the game. Had James gone all-in, he would have finished at $46,800 and lost by $1.
- 42.11% in first on buzzer is the worst that James did in on the signalling device since going 36.84% in his second game on April 5.

I will miss James. I expect ratings to drop severely until the TOC airs.
Jeopardy should also do a Brad – Ken – James contest show where Jeopardy could match the winnings as a donation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.
Making it a benefit for Pancreatic Cancer research is one of the best ideas I’ve heard yet on the Ken-Brad-James match concept. Excellent!
Now that he has lost, can you let us know if you found out about it weeks/months ago or during the filming?
Does anyone think, that Ken Jennings fans, will say, he is still the best Ken Jennings and is still the Jeopardy GOAT. Or Greatest of All Time.
As James choked and couldn’t beat Ken Jennings when it counted.
Or James didn’t want to be #1, as he was fine with #2 and $2.5 Million in 2 months work.
Ken 74 wins is more impressive than James 32 wins.
Ken is still the #1 on the Jeopardy Regular game winners list
The numbers don’t lie. In daily play, Ken is #1 and James #1A.
I think it’s extremely unfair to say James “choked” in a game where he did not give a single incorrect response.
Everyone who makes it on the show is smart, and today he just got beat by a very good performance (two from the looks of Jay’s scores as well). That’s what makes runs like his and Ken’s so incredible; you are consistently battling against extremely capable competitors. Hats off to them all!
Sorry, I wasn’t saying James chocked, I was just listing a bunch of things a Ken Jennings fan would say, to say that Ken Jennings is still the #1 player of All Time to the JEOPARDY GOAT, aka Greatest of All Time….As
Ken Jennings wins 74 Games to James 32 Games
And Ken Jennings won more money….
Looking at the All Time Winners List.
James can pass Ken Jennings with A Million $ Jeopardy Win.
But will James get a chance to play for 2 Million, to beat Brad, as James needs over $2,200,000 to beat Brad and then be the #1 All Time Jeopardy Money Winner Ever on Jeopardy
James’s total should be $2,464,216 on this list…he won $2000 today for finishing second.
Actually, not so. The consolation amounts are never added to the total winning amounts for multi-game champions. Check the current TOC qualifier list and you can confirm.
James had the higher Coryat score, better buzzer average and answered more questions correct. He encountered the bad luck of Daily Double placements. That’s not choking. That’s Jeopardy the game asserting itself over Jeopardy the knowledge exam.
He’s also the all-time leader in game average, which per many metrics gives him claim as greatest ever.
Obviously a three-way, five-day contest between James, Ken and Brad is needed.
Just want to point out that he once again played a perfect game. So many critics of his betting strategy, but it did not hurt him in the end. He made no mistakes and got more correct answers today than anyone. Just a solid opponent and hitting the Daily Doubles were the difference. That is the luck of the game.
Bravo to a truly great champion.
Yes, James played his usual great game. Perfect with no incorrect responses. & Getting no benefit of extra $s of any of the 3 DD Questions. As he pick DD1 on pick #1.
But James did have his 2nd to worst buzz in rate of his 33 games. The worst being his 2nd win.
And Emma was great and deserves win…but pretty lucky a librarian researcher gets a question about a novelist.
With apologies to Patrick Stewart:
It is possible to make no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness. That is life.
Bravo, James. Looking forward to seeing you in the Tournament of Champions. You’re probably the favorite but nothing in that tournament is guaranteed.
So sad–congrats to James! I was looking forward to James breaking the record today. His run was great! I’d like to see the top 30 scores–James has the majority. What were the top 10 before James? Thanks for this web site.
Thank you Andy for your information and guidance during James’ historic run. I have several friends who will be glad the “buzzsaw” was finally defeated. I like to see more competitive matches myself, but was kind of pulling for James to beat Ken’s money record.
But now that he’s been defeated, I can’t wait for the next TOC that has James in it. Will be interesting to see if it changes the game play of the other champions involved.
Go Jeopardy!
Was this the first game taped after Alex’s initial cancer announcement?
He taped the announcement before Thursday’s show; the players at the end of last week knew.
But this was the first one taped after the public knew.
And so, we know Trebek’s spoiler-ish public comment about James taping for “some shows before, some shows after the announcement,” means some = 30 or some = 3, depending on context.
Kind of bummed to see James gone. James honestly brought a lot more excitement to the game with his record breaking games and his amazing totals. I wanted him to break Ken’s record, but oh well.
One thing is for sure, Jeopardy will never be the same. It’ll be interesting to see if people start to default to the bottom to top strategy, but I personally don’t know. The records for highest totals will probably not be broken for a very long time.
Last week I felt like his bets were low and he looked rather sad/off. Perhaps he’d had enough and wasn’t trying on the buzzer. Seems odd that he dropped so significantly in his buzzer rating. Maybe he was tired and had enough, although leaving without beating Jenning’s money record is sadness. Boo hiss. Back to other programming now. I really only watched Jeopardy for James and am sad to see him leave. I don’t enjoy the regular contestants, I found James exciting to watch. I’m super bummed. I’m sure he’ll be back for a tournament though.
Emma was a holdover from the previous week, so she had the weekend to revamp her strategy. She also wrote one of her grad school papers (or her Master’s thesis) at UNC-Chapel Hill on wagering on J! clues – so she has been into studying ways to win at Jeopardy for a long time. This isn’t minimizing her success, but she was no “ordinary” Monday contestant.
Elizabeth:
I believe that you are incorrect. It was a Tuesday, and the only holdover over a weekend would be a Los Angeles-based alternate, who knows going in that they are likely to be held over.
As best as I can tell, Emma came in cold and beat James anyway.
Andy, That brings up an interesting question.
As when Emma played, could Emma have known nothing about James style and strategy.
As none of James games were shown on TV yet, and this was 5he first game of the week, taped with a new group of contestants in the audience.
PS. But I would imagine that even if the above happened and was true, there would be unofficial talk among Jeopardy people who commented on James winnings and strategy.
Like James, is a bigger badder Ken Jennings. So be quick and perfect and you might have a chance to beat James and win.
James –
Thank you for single-handedly changing how Jeopardy is played. You are an artist and created a new way to play and win the game. Your talents and skills are not unnoticed and I thank you for inspiring me to be a life long learner and better understanding the game of wagering.
May you and your family have the best fun traveling and doing whatever brings you together, laughter and joy! All the very best to you.
At least James can finally actually get PAID, although who knows how that is done. The $1,000 and $2,000 loser money should be immediate.
A lot of us who’ve been on the show and frequent this website know how it is done.
