Correct response: What is Russia?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
Following Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea in 2014, Russia was removed from the G8 group of industrialized nations. A request by the United States in 2018 to let Russia back into the group was not taken well by Canada, with Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland saying Russia “made clear that it had no interest in behaving according to the rules of Western democracies”, and former Prime Minister Stephen Harper saying “Russia is more often than not trying deliberately to be a strategic rival, to deliberately counter the good things we’re trying to achieve in the world for no other reason than to just counter them.”

Tim’s large wager seems unnecessarily risky as if he missed the question he misses advancing with $1,199. Betting $0 to finish with $17,400 above the $16,999 of would become #4 Claire appears prudent. The only way he wouldn’t advance then is if all three contestants tomorrow finish above $17,400, still a possibility if they all finish DJ! over $8,700 and there’s an easy FJ.
I’m assuming contestants know previous days scores. If not, this advise may not hold water!
In tournaments, they never know previous scores. He was going for broke though, and it worked out.
Actually Tim would have been guaranteed a spot by betting $0, as he would have taken over the #2 of 4 guaranteed spots, taking over Jack’s spot, who would have been the winner.
