Correct response: What is LEVI?

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, now including Jason Zuffranieri and James Holzhauer, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

Even though the company was founded back in 1853, Levi Strauss & Co. (LEVI) first went public in 1971, but was taken private in 1985. It went public again in March of 2019, going public this time in order to fund both its wishes to expand overseas (especially China), as well as purchase current trendy brands.

This should be a relatively straightforward clue, as long as nobody falls for the “wait, what, how did they only have an IPO in 2019” and “they want the symbol, not the company” traps.

Since Alex Trebek’s diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, many community members have been raising money. The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store is as well! All proceeds from any “Keep The Faith And We’ll Win” shirt sold will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. To date, over $440 has been raised.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Beth’s comment of “Faint heart never won…game show”? More contestants should take that to heart.

  1. Congrats to Beth!! The 2 DDs (total 8K did not hurt…)
Had Elise gotten ger DD right, she would have been in the lead at FJ by 1.600 (swing of 3.200 and everything else being even) . Not that it mattered, since she got FJ wrong. A surprise that a player of her caliber did not get LEVI. The clue was as straight (and easy) as they come. I think a majority of ticker symbols go by 3 or 4 letters, so : allowing blue jeans on the trading floor and LEVI……I am almost sure it would have been a clean sweep in a college tournament. Elise must have had a block or somehow misunderstood the clue.
So we start the week with a new champ and the count to 5,6,7 or 8 wins etc begins again……

    • One thing that may have thrown her is it’s rare that a company over 100 years old has an IPO.

      • Maybe. Sill, it was already the second IPO (first in 1971 and the taken back private in 1985 as Andy explained. I dabble in the stock market, but still….it was as clear as the air after a thunderstorm imo, Blue jeans and a 4 letter ticker symbol?? Maybe she just overthought it.

    • Sorry, 9K.

FWIW – did anyone else notice that the winner, Beth Stewart, is from James Holzhauer’s home town of Naperville, IL? I wonder if their paths have ever crossed.

    • There’s been a recent trend of strong champions hailing from the Chicago area, including Alex Jacob, Julia Collins, James and Emma, and now Beth. I do wonder where Beth’s impressive total ranks among first day winnings.

  3. As it has often been said, the answer is easy if you know it.

Elise really Cliff Clavined that one. She would’ve lost anyway, but I’m just sayin’. I think most of America got that one…

  5. Stephen P is a great guy. I grew up with him in the same town and we were good friends as kids. He was brilliant then, none of us were surprised to hear that he was on Jeoporady, lol!
