(correct response beneath the contestants)
We may have lost Alex, but the show must go on. Alex wouldn’t want it any other way. Please, let’s remember him over the next few weeks of banked episodes, and then afford him the same respect to his successors that we afforded Alex when he replaced Art Fleming in 1984. Alex’s last episode airs Friday, January 8, 2021; Ken Jennings’ first episode as guest host airs on January 11.
Today’s contestants:
Spencer Robins, a graduate student & teacher originally from New York, New York![]() |
Rhonda Byer, a retired educator from Los Angeles, California![]() |
Brayden Smith, a policy intern from Las Vegas, Nevada (1-day total: $31,000)![]() |
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: Who is Henry VIII?
More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2020 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Inspired to respond to Martin Luther’s attacks on the Catholic church regarding indulgences, King Henry VIII of England, assisted by Thomas More, wrote Defence of the Seven Sacraments. Pope Leo X even awarded Henry the title Defender of the Faith for the work; it is a title still carried by English monarchs.
There is an irony behind Henry’s defense of Catholicism, though; by the 1530s, Henry had broken from the Catholic church and the English Reformation had begun, mostly because the Pope refused to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Especially on Daily Doubles, the audio in studio is better than the audio we hear over the television. The judges also have the ability to isolate audio and to stop tape. If the judges give credit for a correct response, it is because they feel that the contestant has given a correct response.

If you’re good with the dates that notable English monarchs ruled, that’s an easy backdoor way to get this one. I am not very good with the dates that far back. I thought I had this one nailed with James I of King James Bible fame.
That is the only way I guessed this correct. By the date.
WOW! You GO JAMES – I mean BRAYDEN!
I like him. He seems a little shy. Even apologized yesterday when he found the third daily double.
Like James, from Las Vegas! But will he lose tomorrow or go on a long streak? Nobody knows, but > 60% chance to make TOC…
And here I thought Ryan Hemmel would be the last multi-day, TOC level champion in the Trebek era! At this rate, Brayden may be the last champ under Alex, period. Future opponents will need big Daily Doubles, but hard to hit them if you don’t get them!
Second impressive lock in 2 days. Maybe……could Brayden be the one to go to 5 (and more?)?
Ok, we’ve got another great player to get behind for a long streak. But remember John a few weeks ago looked amazing and then only won two games.
Nous verrons….
Of course, hitting 6 out of 6 DDs and getting all right does not happen that often.
In the post-game chat, Alex said to Rhonda and Spencer “You played well, but you ran into Billy Buzzsaw.” So because of that, I’ll just give him the nickname Buzzsaw Brayden.
