Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, December 15, 2020

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Magazines) for Tuesday, December 15, 2020 (Season 37, Game 67):

This magazine had the same person on its cover since its founding 20 years ago until it chose Breonna Taylor as its Sept. 2020 cover

(correct response beneath the contestants)

We may have lost Alex, but the show must go on. Alex wouldn’t want it any other way. Please, let’s remember him over the next few weeks of banked episodes, and then afford him the same respect to his successors that we afforded Alex when he replaced Art Fleming in 1984. Alex’s last episode airs Friday, January 8, 2021; Ken Jennings’ first episode as guest host airs on January 11.

Today’s contestants:

Brayden Smith, a policy intern from Las Vegas, Nevada
Brayden Smith on Jeopardy!
Margaret de Larios, a public affairs specialist from Pasadena, California
Margaret de Larios on Jeopardy!
Valerie Castelo, a career counselor from San Leandro, California (1-day total: $38,001)
Valerie Castelo on Jeopardy!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Oprah Winfrey put Breonna Taylor on the cover of the September 2020 issue of her magazine as “a cry for justice in her name”. In Louisville, Kentucky on March 13, three Louisville police officers stormed into Breonna Taylor’s apartment. Taylor was shot dead. In the wake of George Floyd’s filmed execution, her death garnered international attention as pleas for justice have fallen mostly on deaf ears; none of the officers involved have been charged in her death.

I’d also like to commend Jeopardy! for choosing this as a Final Jeopardy! clue, as it will only serve to amplify the voices calling for racial justice in the United States. And remember: #SayHerName.

15 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, December 15, 2020"

  1. Do you think they’ll accept it if someone says Oprah magazine or something like that?

  2. Donna Kirchmeier | December 15, 2020 at 11:11 am |

    No it’s the “O” magazine.

    • Wikipedia says, “O, The Oprah Magazine, sometimes simply abbreviated to O”

      • Not just Wikipedia, on the cover of every issue it’s called:
        O
        THE OPRAH
        MAGAZINE
So if O by itself is acceptable, than THE OPRAH MAGAZINE alone would have sufficed also I would think. New champ Brayden came the closest to getting the full name, just missing a pesky little “the”. 👏

An even shorter answer than om!

  4. Darnit, I really liked Valerie.

  5. Pretty impressive start by Brayden!

  6. Andy, by your thought that Braydon’s chances of getting the Daily Doubles as he did today being 9,240 to 1 are you referring to his getting them all within the first 5 clues, or to some other uncommon possibility?

    • If Brayden had control of the board and there was a Daily Double still out, he found it. His first selection after gaining control in the Jeopardy! round was a Daily Double, and his first two selections in Double Jeopardy! after gaining control were both Daily Doubles.

  7. Is this the shortest answer for the Final Clue?

  8. Of course the Double Jeopardy clues do tend to favor certain types of clue categories (and dollar values), so a well-prepared player could reduce those odds considerably. It looks like Brayden was well-prepared and made the most of it. Such deeper strategies indicate he may be a very formidable opponent going forward.

    • Ben (Glutton for Punishment) | December 16, 2020 at 1:55 pm |

He won with buzzer dominance and mastery of the material. All other things being equal, he would’ve still had a lockout game if he missed all 3 DD’s. What it really did was prevent his opponents from making a big splash to catch up and make it competitive. Hopefully this means those future opponents in the stands will adjust their games accordingly, if they ever get the chance to risk it for the biscuit.

  9. Brad (not Rutter) | December 15, 2020 at 5:10 pm |

Or, he just got really lucky.

  10. laurel hensel | December 15, 2020 at 11:41 pm |

I feel Brayden and Valerie were more better prepared than Margaret during the game, though all did well on Final Jeopardy.

  11. I knew the answer because I remember reading about the issue in the news, but was second guessing myself on whether the magazine was actually called O.
