Inspired by what he observed in the Soviet Union. Dr. Fernand Lamaze began teaching his method of psychoprophylaxis in Paris. Ideally, it strives to eliminate the pain of childbirth through educating expectant mothers about the processes of labor, relaxation responses to contractions, and breathing exercises designed to interfere with the transmission of pain signals. Marjorie Karmel, after her own experience using Lamaze’s techniques, wrote Thank You, Dr. Lamaze in 1959 and founded what is now Lamaze International (originally the American Society for Psychoprophylaxis in Obstetrics) with Elisabeth Bing one year later.

Sorry for this belated comment re-
garding yesterday’s FJ! clue: I won-
der if Henry Kissinger’s apparently-
accidental 1970 reference to the
familiar children’s rhyme and to the
Robert Penn Warren novel (“…All
the king’s horses and all the king’s
men could not put Humpty Dumpty back
together again”) was a purely unwit-
ting one, or if, perhaps, he was
subconsciously aware of the Humpty
Dumpty and “All The King’s Men” con-
nections. In either case, he de-
served credit from Woodward and
Bernstein for inspiring a memorably
ironic book title.
I do not understand the clue. That is a terribly written clue.
I thought so too. It made no sense to me.
Think of it as a fill in the blank: she wrote “Thank you ______.”
Wednesday, Dec. 23 The U.S. Air Force: USO Tour to Japan (Original Airdate: 09/27/07)
As good as he looked Richard Johnston only won one game, this one. Go figure.
Well, now the clue was updated since I first read it.
