Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category American Lit) for Wednesday, December 9, 2020 (Season 37, Game 63):
A book by him says, “From the forest came the call…distinct and definite as never before–a long-drawn howl”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
We may have lost Alex, but the show must go on. Alex wouldn’t want it any other way. Please, let’s remember him over the next few weeks of banked episodes, and then afford him the same respect to his successors that we afforded Alex when he replaced Art Fleming in 1984. Alex’s last episode airs Friday, January 8, 2021; Ken Jennings’ first episode as guest host airs on January 11.
Today’s contestants:
Kendra Blanchette, a registered dietician from Elk Grove, California![]() |
Jason Grote, a writer from Los Angeles, California![]() |
Kristen Thomas-McGill, a graduate student originally from Louisville, Kentucky (1-day total: $22,801)![]() |
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: Who is Jack London?

The aforementioned quote comes from Chapter 7 of Jack London’s famous work The Call of the Wild and describes the call of a wolf picked up by Buck (a St. Bernard-Scotch Collie mix), beginning Buck’s feral return to the wild. In the events of the story, Buck becomes legendary in the area following the death of his final master, John Thornton, constantly attacking the Native American tribe that killed Thornton and ensuring they never re-enter the valley where Thornton died.
London’s observations after spending nearly a year in the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush formed most of the source material for the book.

just saw the word ‘call’, made me think of the obvious ‘call of the wild’, which led to Jack London. I’m saying all three will get it.
Where did “stay clam” come from
http://www.j-archive.com/help.php#stayclam
Allen Ginsberg could be a plausible wrong answer (if somebody has heard of Howl but didn’t realize it’s a poem).
My first thought was Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tarzan.
Tight two way battle today. Great game. Felt like the clues today were tough.
I’ll be very surprised if we see another 5 game winner before the end.
I hated that question.
Category is American Lit.
Question is a Book by Him…
Isn’t correct answer just as much, The Call of the Wild as Jack London?
Pronouns matter, Gary.
If it wanted the book, the clue would have said “This book”, not “A clue by him”.
Congrats to Ken Jennings. This episode marks the 100th time he’s appeared on a half-hour episode of Jeopardy——75 times during his regular run, 3 times during the Ultimate Tournament of Champions, 2 times during IBM Watson, 4 times during Battle of the Decades, 4 times during the All-Star Games, 8 times during the Jeopardy GOAT, and 4 times as a category clue giver.
If he’s not ready now, then his 175 IQ will have to come up with an extensional resolution.
Did he really appear 8 times during GOAT?? I thought Ken won it after 4 shows. Just wondering.
The GOAT games were hour long events on ABC. Essentially two Jeopardy games end to end. When they were re-aired last summer, they were broken down to 8 half-hour regular games.
It was nice to see Jason get the very last clue in Double Jeopardy! right so he could participate in Final Jeopardy!; definitely the highlight of the episode.
