Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, December 10, 2020

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category European Geography) for Thursday, December 10, 2020 (Season 37, Game 64):

Once a residence of rulers of Austria, this city on the Danube less than 20 miles from Vienna became a national capital in 1993

(correct response beneath the contestants)

We may have lost Alex, but the show must go on. Alex wouldn’t want it any other way. Please, let’s remember him over the next few weeks of banked episodes, and then afford him the same respect to his successors that we afforded Alex when he replaced Art Fleming in 1984. Alex’s last episode airs Friday, January 8, 2021; Ken Jennings’ first episode as guest host airs on January 11.

Today’s contestants:

Becca Jones, an attorney from Phoenix, Arizona
Becca Jones on Jeopardy!
Gabriel De Roche, a Ph.D. student originally from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Gabriel De Roche on Jeopardy!
Kendra Blanchette, a registered dietician from Elk Grove, California (1-day total: $26,401)
Kendra Blanchette on Jeopardy!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Bratislava, currently the capital of Slovakia, is a short distance from Vienna (though “less than 20 miles” is certainly closer than one might usually think about the two cities). It also served as the residence of Maria Theresa, who was a Habsburg ruler for 40 years in the 18th century.

During my research, though, I actually found a citation for the “less than 20 miles from Vienna” part of the clue: a 1980 New York Times article entitled “Vienna, Gateway to the East”: “Negotiations are under way to extend the existing line of the Schnellbahn, a fast commuter rail network, between the center of Vienna and Schwechat Airport to Bratislava, [then part of] Czechoslovakia, less than 20 miles away.”

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Future contestants: Pay very close attention to the word “this” in clues, because that’s what the show wants. Remembering that today, especially on GAME SHOWS $2000, would have at least led to the game not being a runaway (though it wouldn’t have changed the ultimate outcome).

19 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, December 10, 2020"

  1. Every time I see it, I get a kick
out of the James Holzhauer sight gag
    that the Jeopardy! production staff
put together. It appears in one of
the opening montages that airs in
rotation about once a week (it last
appeared on Dec. 9). A clip of
    James’s famous “all-in” hand gesture
is juxtaposed next to a clip of
    Alex, (coincidentally) displaying
    a nearly-identical gesture while
    kneeling beside a giant tortoise
    (presumably on the Galapagos
    Islands).

Alex never fails to give James a
    shout-out whenever a contestant
    mimics James’s all-in gesture.

Love that “Jeopardy James”! Hopefully he will get a chance to host some future games. Not a fan of Ken Jennings.

    • Love Ken Jennings. Not a fan of James H.

    • You might not be a fan, but he’s still the greatest of all time. Jeopardy Jimmy didn’t even come close to Ken’s record streak…not even halfway!

      • Gary Kevin Ware | December 10, 2020 at 11:22 pm |

Not even half way and yet he won nearly as much money as Jennings as his average winnings was about the same as the previous one day record.

        • The streak is way more impressive. Ken was much more conservative in his DD wagering. Actually winning is remembered far longer than how much you won. Look at the revered records in any sport, they’re never about money.

          • Gary Kevin Ware | December 11, 2020 at 10:52 pm |

Of course, in sports, money records aren’t revered, because that is not the measuring stick, except maybe secondarily in individual sports like golf or tennis. A sports equivalent would be if the one game record for TD passes was 7 and then a QB averaged 7 TD passes per game over 2 seasons. Now that would be dominance!

    • Wondering if his association with FanDuel will hurt him. I don’t know if there’s ‘official’ wagering on Jeopardy, but the fact he would know outcomes before they are aired, and FanDuel is a wagering company – would seem a conflict of interest.

  3. I must say I was quite pleased in last night’s game to see how Ken Jennings presented himself in delivering all 5 clues in the “GOAT” category.
I did have my doubts earlier, I will admit, but as the first temporary host, beginning Jan.11th 2021, I think he is going to be just fine.

  4. Okay, is it safe for me to say I don’t think I would know anybody that would know this response??!! 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

    • Then you don’t know any European I guess?

    • Gary Kevin Ware | December 10, 2020 at 11:27 pm |

I didn’t ‘know’ this but I got it by an educated guess because I knew that there were a lot of capital cities along the Danube that start with the letter ‘B’.

  5. I wonder whether they would accept “Pressburg”, the German name. The city was named Pressburg for the longest time (when it was still part of the Habsburg empire until after WWI. ,but that was over 100 years ago). You have the same situation with other cities. Kaliningrad e.g., today a part of Russia : the Kaliningrad district is a semi-enclave of Russia – was called ” Koenigsberg”and the main city in what was “Ostpreussen” in Germany under the “Kaiser” ???

But this being Central Europe and Bratislava having only a little over 400.000 residents (not counting the different refugee “waves”) AND Slovakia having been part of Czechoslovakia till ’93) I doubt that we will have a triple solve. Funny enough, Kaliningrad and Bratislava are the same size and give or take a few thousand the same number of “core” residents.
Btw, the CENTERS of Vienna and Bratislava are 65 kilometers apart (= 40 miles). In that regard the FJ clue is actually incorrect. Only if you consider Schwechat – beginning exactly where the eastern outskirt of Vienna ends- and the western border of Bratislava, then we are talking about 20 miles. The Schnellbahn extension is 40 years later still “under consideration”…..
    @Andy
A short remark about Maria Theresia (daughter of Charles VI who issued the “Pragmatic Sanction”): she was crowned but never resided in Pressburg. Her primary residence was the Hofburg in Vienna and she had a residence of sorts in Buda Castle, located in Budapest at the “Buda Hill” on the right side of the Danube. But that was more a location where the Habsburg rulers stayed when they visited Budapest (after “Austria/Hungary” was established by Franz I./II., having abolished the Holy Roman Empire.)

Well, let’s hope for the best. Maybe the players will surprise me and we get a triple solve. I always like it better when people know things.

  6. I knew it only because a friend, who was stationed at the US embassy in Bratislava at the time, said that they only good thing about Bratislava was that it was only a half hour’s drive to Vienna. Probably not a fair commentary on Bratislava but I did remember his comment.

  7. After 7 consecutive episodes with a new champion, somebody wins two shows in a row.

Some of those who lost to James probably could’ve been a champion if they were playing now

  8. Once again we have an easy geography clue and once again it was completely botched by the contestants. It seems to me that every time the contestants hear “geography” they panic and cannot think straight.(And it’s not just African geography.) One only has to think that since not too many European countries have changed their capitals in the past century, the new capital has to be the capital of a new country. The proximity to Vienna eliminates all the former Yugoslav and Soviet republics, leaving us with Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia broke up into two countries in 1993 (part of the clue), and obviously Prague is not the answer. That leaves Bratislava. By the way, I do not know what country has Salzburg as its capital.

    • This should be easy, TIM PIERRE! Ever heard of a fellow by the name of MOZART ???? Salzburg is no country’s capital!!!
Fyi: Salzburg is a city and capital of the PROVINCE of Salzburg, one of the nine provinces of AUSTRIA. Vienna is also one of the nine provinces of Austria as well as the capital of the country .So Vienna has a triple function: it is a province, a city and the capital of the entire country.
The provinces of Austria and their capitals are:
      Vienna/ Vienna
      Niederoesterreich/St. Poelten
Salzburg/ Salzburg (the city is only part of the province)
      Oberoesterreich/Linz
      Burgenland/Eisenstadt
      Steiermark/Graz
      Tirol/Innsbruck(2 x winter Olympics, 1964 and 1984)
      Kaernten/Klagenfurt
      Vorarlberg/Bregenz

I spelled all the Austrian way, except for the “Umlaute” I don’t have those on my keyboard.

So there IS a world outside the United States…..😊

And Sarajevo (since it was one of the answers) is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina which was part of the former Yugoslavia. Became (in)famous because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie of Hohenberg in June 1914. This led to WWI…..B&H was then part of the Austro/Hungarian Empire and the emperor (and uncle of Archduke Franz Ferdinand) in 1914 was Emperor Franz Joseph I., husband of Elisabeth ( “Sissy” movies….)Franz Joseph and Elisabeth in turn were the parents of Crown Prince Rudolf who shot Baroness Mary Vetsera and then himself in Mayerling in 1889. His mother (Elisabeth) was assassinated herself in Genf (Geneva, Switzerland) in 1898 at the age of 60, Switzerland having de jure NO capital. (De facto capital is BERN).
You may have heard of Franz Ferdinand’s assassination, “Sisi” and that she was killed as well,( there were several movies about all the characters) the Mayerling murder/suicide by Crown Prince Rudolf. Those events were pretty popular, even in the United States. After all, WWI. was triggered in Sarajevo.

      • The clue says “national capital”. That eliminates Salzburg. Sarajevo is a national capital, but as I said before, it’s definitely not 20 miles from Vienna. And yes, as an opera lover, I have heard of Mozart.
