Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, March 12, 2021

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Places) for Friday, March 12, 2021 (Season 37, Game 120):

8 Pres. have visited this battle site with an Algonquian name about 50 miles from Washington; for McKinley, it was a return visit

(correct response beneath the contestants)

The Jeopardy! community is mourning the loss of Brayden Smith, who passed away on February 5. The Brayden Smith Memorial Fund has been established, dedicated to furthering the educational aspirations of Southern Nevada students.

Today’s contestants:

Keith Bednarczuk, a letter carrier from Columbus, Ohio
Keith Bednarczuk on Jeopardy!
Michalle Gould, a librarian originally from Austin, Texas
Michalle Gould on Jeopardy!
Dave Pai, a field application scientist originally from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania (1-day total: $28,300)
Dave Pai on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Dave dominated Double Jeopardy! yesterday and rode them to a runaway victory in yesterday’s match. If he can keep that mojo going, Win #2 should not be difficult for him. But the signalling device is fickle and a lot can happen!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is Antietam?

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, now including Jason Zuffranieri and James Holzhauer, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The first of the 8 sitting Presidents to visit Antietam was the very famous visit by Abraham Lincoln to try to prod George McClellan into action; William McKinley served as a sergeant in Company E, 23rd Ohio Infantry, and returned to visit the battlefield as President. The most recent sitting President to visit Antietam in Maryland (50 miles as the crow flies from DC) was Jimmy Carter in 1978. The National Park Service has a page detailing the Presidential visits.

I’d also like to commend the writers for putting “with an Algonquin name” into the clue here in order to pin this correct response; only Antietam fits the entire clue as worded; Antietam is believed to derive from an Algonquin phrase meaning “swift-flowing stream”; the battlefield is named after Antietam Creek.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • The show’s writers keep wanting to shoehorn Parson Weems into the game, like GRANT WOOD’S AMERICANA $2000 today. Of course, it fell for a Triple Stumper. Nobody cares about Parson Weems.
  • This week’s games raised a total of $112,503 for Stand Up to Cancer.
  • I can understand Keith’s Final Jeopardy! wager, as there’s a higher likelihood of a math error from Michalle due to his unusual score.

  1. Algonquian versus Algonquin? I just spent a few minutes on Google/Wikipedia, etc., trying to figure out which was correct: It seems that the mother family of languages is Algonquian, with an “a”. But the specific language spoken by the Algonqui(a??)n people is Algonquin, without an “a”, but sometimes it is referred to as Algonquian. Suffice it to say that I remain confused. Perhaps someone on this blog has better insight into this.

  2. I think it being within 50 miles of Washington is a very helpful part of this clue. The Algonquians covered a lot of territory, but I tend to think of New York/New England when I hear that word. Fifty miles of Washington eliminates the northeast.

  3. Yet another poorly written FJ clue. The Algonquian part doesn’t help at all; in fact it’s quite misleading. Much better would have been something like, “named for a Maryland creek.”

  4. This is going to be a tough game for Dave’s fans to watch if they don’t have access to this blog.
    All’s well that ends well:
In FJ! Keith & Michalle were playing each other – and Dave slipped right thru to win the game!
Congrats Dave! Wishing you well on Monday!

The Algonquian part of the clue was VERY helpful to me. It eliminated Gettysburg….which is also approximately 70 miles from DC.

  6. Jim Cardillo | March 12, 2021 at 2:01 pm |

I was thinking either Appomattox or Manassas

  7. I was also thinking Manassass but At least Gettsyburg was eliminated. Monmouth is in New jersey and a bit further north.

Good luck to Dave winning game number 3 next week

  8. While Antietam was the first thing that popped into my mind, I dithered about the Algonquian reference. While dithering I ran out of time.

  9. Not sure if Dave’s over $20K Coryat drop from yesterday to today and still win is a record, but pretty incredible! It’s anybody’s guess how he’ll do Monday.

  10. Working for a summer as a historian at the site in question might have helped me just a tad here, lol

  11. Are the players given calculators? Michelle should’ve wagered $15,365. She wagered enough to beat Keith if she had known it.

Dave made the right bet. His only hope was to bet 0 and hope his opponents bet big and lost.

Keith should’ve bet 0 because his only hope was for Michelle to miss. He should not have bet more than $7,281 to assure himself second place.

It’s not easy to decide how much to bet. They don’t know how much their opponents are betting. There have been lots of triple stumpers lately. Are the contestants aware of that?

    • No, players are not given calculators. They have a pen and paper.

    • Michael Day | March 13, 2021 at 1:10 am |

Keith should not have bet zero. He would lose if Michelle bet zero (possible). He should bet between $719 and $7281, so that he covers Micha if he’s right but still beats Dave if he’s wrong. I would suggest a bet on the smaller end in case Micha wagers Shoretegically.

    • The difference between what Michalle wagered and the $15,365 she did would rarely make a difference in this game situation unless 435 would have been enough to win and 100 would not have.

  12. I do not think it was a poorly written clue. The hint that helped was 50 miles from Washington. Thank you for bringing us eveJeopardy

How will the final new host of jeopardy be chosen? I’m a new person here so my apologies if this was answered before.
