Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, May 11, 2021

Happy Tuesday! Today is Day 7 of Bill Whitaker hosting; thus far, $161,599 has been donated by Jeopardy! to Media Fellowship House. Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Books of the Bible) for Tuesday, May 11, 2021 (Season 37, Game 162):

Its last chapter includes wisdom from King Lemuel, taught to him by his mother, as well as the famous “Virtuous Woman” passage

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Lara Phillips, a librarian from Portland, Oregon
Lara Phillips on Jeopardy!
Jeff Mitchum, a teacher from Dixon, California
Jeff Mitchum on Jeopardy!
Juliet Mayer, a graduate student originally from The Plains, Virginia (2-day total: $53,200)
Juliet Mayer on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Juliet put up one of the strongest Double Jeopardy! rounds in recent memory yesterday en route to a Coryat score of over $25,000. If she can keep that up—she’s also had zero unforced errors (being incorrect after a buzz-in) through two games—game #3 could be very similar to game #2.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Proverbs 31 opens with “The words of King Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him”. Essentially, it suggests that wine “is not for kings”, “lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted”.

The “Virtuous Woman” passage can be found at Proverbs 31:10-31.

I feel as though that this is the type of Final Jeopardy! that will play easier for a certain subset of home viewer (the subset that will then come online to be upset about the lack of Biblical knowledge of the contestants). My personal viewpoint on the matter, as someone who has never been to a church service that was not a wedding or a funeral, is that the Bible is inspiration for so much of Western literature and art that Jeopardy! needs to have it as part of its canon in some fashion. Sports fans and movie fans would be upset if there were no longer any sports or movie Final Jeopardy! clues; this is really no different.

  1. Dead on the analysis that clues about the Bible should be fair game for Jeopardy. As mentioned, to be ignorant of the Bible is to be ignorant of literature and art in the Western canon. Not knowing about Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, David and Goliath, etc. would leave a person greatly confused in the west, regardless of the obvious critiques of the historicity of such people and events. I think the Jeopardy writers have overall included clues relating to the Bible at a very appropriate rate given its significance.

And today’s clue seems more than fair. “Proverbs” = “wisdom” is about the simplest associations there is in the Biblical canon.

  2. This clue favors Protestants over Catholics, who are not encouraged to read the Bible on their own. That said, any contestant going on Jeopardy! ought to bone up on books of the Bible, just as they would on state capitals.

  3. With Juliet’s stats going into the game, it just goes to show how important LUCK is in this game, I guess. The DDs were not her friend today.
    Twas nice knowing you, Juliet!

    Congratulations Jeff!

    And the beat goes on…

  4. Well it seems that the daily doubles were not in Juliet’s favor today after just two wins. Luck wasn’t on her side either, but congrats to jeff on his win today. I just hope he could get a winning streak running and end this three month dry spell I read about proverbs during bible study so this helped me a bit today.

Did she also make a betting mistake? Even if she had gotten the answer right, she didn’t bet enough to cover the second place player’s “all in” bet. I would assume that the correct strategy would be a much larger bet.

  5. Now that I’ve read “The Virtuous Woman” passage I’m not likely to forget it’s gist nor where it’s written. I’ll also remember what the husband is doing while the wife is performing her virtuous duties.

Wow! Juliet definitely does not know her Bible. I thought that would be a $200 type clue in the regular jeopardy round. When I saw the clue I was thinking how clutch it was of her to answer the last question in dj correctly to give herself the lead.

  7. Andy, nice comments on the Bible as a FJ category.
“as part of its canon” … pun intended ?

  8. I noticed that frequently during the game Jeff glances to his left into the middle distance. What is over there? The audience? The judges? I only ask because nobody else seems to do this. Curious.

What happens if this streak continues and we don’t get any 5 day Champions for the Tournament of Champions. I don’t think we have had a five day Champion with any of the guest hosts (or did we get a couple during the Ken Jennings period). I don’t think its directly the “rotation of hosts” (and the need to adjust to timing) and I think it may just be “bad luck”, but this is the longest I can recall without even a four day champion.

    • There are probably lots of potentially outstanding contestants who don’t care to travel to Los Angeles during a pandemic.

    • Brian Chang won seven games and they brought back Zach Newkirk who had won four but had to leave because of Covid 19. Zach eventually won six.
