Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, May 3, 2021

Happy Monday! Today is Bill Whitaker’s first day as guest host. All of the winnings for this week and next will be matched and donated to Media Fellowship House. Now, here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 19th Century Americans) for Monday, May 3, 2021 (Season 37, Game 156):

His book “An Overland Journey from New York to San Francisco in the Summer of 1859” shows he heeded his own famous advice

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

César del Peral, an attorney originally from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico
César del Peral on Jeopardy!
Eliza Eaton-Stern, a middle school history teacher from Aurora, Colorado
Eliza Eaton-Stern on Jeopardy!
Emily Sands, a vice president of operations from Chanhassen, Minnesota (2-day total: $53,401)
Emily Sands on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Emily has played very strongly over her first two wins; she was much better at finding Daily Doubles, and she has been betting very aggressively. If she can go 3-for-3 on the big clues today, she should have no problem taking a third victory.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Horace Greeley is the famous founder of the New York Tribune, famous for the quote “Go West, young man”, from an editorial in that paper on July 13, 1865. The full quote: “Washington is not a place to live in. The rents are high, the food is bad, the dust is disgusting and the morals are deplorable. Go West, young man, go West and grow up with the country.” The book mentioned in the clue is also known for having one of the first descriptions of Yosemite National Park distributed outside of California.

  1. Epoch is often pronounced like epic, though I would typically say it more like “epuck”.
