Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, July 2, 2021

Happy Friday! Today is Day 5 of Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s hosting stint. Through 4 days, $84,058 has been donated to Odyssey Atlanta. Regardless of today’s outcome, after today’s game the show will surpass $2 million in total donations to charity on behalf of the show’s guest hosts. Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Hit Songs) for Friday, July 2, 2021 (Season 37, Game 200):

Written in 1930, this song was a No. 1 hit in 1960 & was covered by The Band to support a 1976 Presidential candidate

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

McKenzie Miller, a clinical trial researcher from Cincinnati, Ohio
McKenzie Miller on Jeopardy!
Nanci Skinner, a grocery clerk from Warren, Maine
Nanci Skinner on Jeopardy!
Courtney Shah, a community college instructor from Portland, Oregon (4-day total: $72,058)
Courtney Shah on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Courtney is the first 4-day champion since February; if she wins today, she becomes the first 5-day champion since January. It’s a very difficult task to sweep a taping day, though, as fatigue definitely becomes a consideration. If she can, though, she’ll become the first player since MacKenzie Jones in February 2020 to sweep a taping day.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

“Georgia on My Mind” was originally recorded in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael; Ray Charles took the song to No. 1 in 1960. The song was also part of the general repertoire of The Band dating back to their days in Canada as Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks; when the musicians left Hawkins and formed The Band, The Band kept playing the song, and recorded a version for Jimmy Carter’s campaign in 1976. An instrumental version was used in the late 1980s and early 1990s for the Atlanta-set TV series Designing Women.

This is also a clue which will play easier for someone either hearing it—as “The Band” can be emphasized differently from the generic “the band”—or reading it in mixed case as opposed to all caps.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • This week, $94,258 has been donated to Odyssey Atlanta. $2,007,219 has been donated to all charities.
  • The CANADIANA $800 clue in today’s game is believed to be the first reference to the City of Guelph (and the University of Guelph) in a Jeopardy! clue; previous references to Guelph have always been the Guelphs (as in the opposition faction to the Ghibellines from Middle Age Italy).

I am fan of ‘The Band’, but never heard their take on “Georgia on my mind”.

  2. Guessing ‘Georgia’ wouldn’t be considered correct. Forgot the full title was “Georgia on my Mind”.

  3. I don’t think there could ever be a better rendition of that song than the Ray Charles one, but mentioning his name as the one who made it #1 would probably make it too easy.

  4. Seeing Hit Songs as the category I’d go all in but yeah not when it comes to politics 😩🙄hope we get the 5 day champ but can’t root agst a fellow Ohioan!

  5. “1976 Presidential Candidate” reminded me immediately of Jimmy Carter, the humble peanut farmer from Georgia. I think I would have missed FJ however, thinking the title of the song was simply “Georgia”.

    • Marty Cunningham | July 2, 2021 at 1:50 pm |

Started with the 1976 clue, like Howard did, and immediately thought of the song, but Ray’s version, since it was a pop standard at the time, but i also knew about Hoagy Carmichael doing it originally, so 1930 seemed to be a good exact start date.

Congrats to Courtney! Day 3 and 4 start to take their toll. Good job on winning 5 games!

  6. I am a fan of the Band but Georgia on my mind I never listened to in a long time.

Congrats to Courtney on a five game win today! She has a little bit more than Rachel Lindgren’s total when she was also a five time champion from 2018. I thought Nanci would have just stood pat on her original bet and would have wonbut it seems that didn’t happen. the 1976 presidential candidate did remind me of Carter.

  7. Have not had good luck with FJ lately but nailed this one. Carter to Georgia and rest came right away. Keep going Courtney. Q: Does a 5 day winner automatically qualify for TOC but the money won may keep them out?

    • A 5-day winner automatically qualifies for TOC no matter how much money they have won, simple as that.

      • Thank you, J1996 – I don’t know why, but I always had the notion that ToC participation required a minimum of $100,000 in winnings.

Now I will remember- the requirement is to win 5 days.

        Win 5 days = ToC !!!

(Unless J! execs make an exception as they did for Emma ? – who defeated Jeopardy James.)

        Thanks again!

  8. If a statistic is noteworthy, it gets noted in the “Andy’s Thoughts” section above.

Therefore, if you do not see something, it is safe to assume that the statistic is likely not as notable as you think it is as a reader.

Also, remember to be excellent towards contestants.

(Edited to add: Barring death or personal misconduct, every single 5-time champion in the history of the show has qualified for a Tournament of Champions. Commenters are reminded not to spread misinformation.)

As the old saying goes…a win is a win is a win…
While Courtney’s path to winning five games was far from impressive, imho, if you can best 14 other players, you’ve certainly done something right.
Looing at her pre-FJ positions over the week, you’d never guess that this player would be a TOC qualifier. She finished 3rd,1st(non-runaway),2nd,1st(her only runaway),and 3rd.
It seems she does, however, have a knack for reading how she should wager in FJ, ie, reading her own situation, as well as her competitors. Good luck to her, I hope she wins 10 or more games this way, just goes to show you don’t need a string of runaway games to be a multi-day champ.

  10. And that’s how you bet the Final from 3rd place when all three are pretty close. Courtney could have actually bet zero, but she rightly knew she should be safe with that bet. It was good to see that all of them bet strategically in the Final. That doesn’t always happen.

Who has raised the most money for their charity so far?

  12. Denise B. | July 3, 2021 at 4:17 am |

I guessed “Georgia” because of Carter, but I, too, didn’t know the full title.

But here’s the thing: There is a photo of the original 45, and it says “Georgia” with “On My Mind” in parentheses!

    • Ronnie Gambardella | July 4, 2021 at 12:15 pm |

I think Georgia would be acceptable as that is the name it is commonly known as.
