Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, August 2, 2021

Happy Monday, and Happy August! Jeopardy! still has two full weeks of new episodes to go this season, thanks to the two weeks of reruns around Christmas and New Years; today is David Faber’s first day as guest host. All contestant winnings this week are being matched and donated to the Robin Hood Foundation in New York City. Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Businessmen) for Monday, August 2, 2021 (Season 37, Game 221):

Born in the village of Waldorf, Germany, in 1763, he arrived in the U.S. in 1784

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Anna Hendrick, a private investigator from Queens, New York
Anna Hendrick on Jeopardy!
Kent Easter, a management consultant from San Diego, California
Kent Easter on Jeopardy!
Matt Amodio, a Ph.D student from New Haven, Connecticut (8-day total: $291,200)
Matt Amodio on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Today, Matt becomes the first player in Jeopardy! history to play under three different hosts. He certainly figured out LeVar Burton’s cadence; will he figure out David Faber’s? If he does, you’ll very likely see him take win #9. If not, our challengers today will have more of a chance.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

America’s first multi-millionaire, John Jacob Astor moved to the United States after the American Revolution. Seeing the potential for the western expansion of the country, he became involved in (and rich through) both the fur trade and acquiring land in Manhattan just before New York City began its big 19th century expansion. New York City became one of the most important cities in the world and Astor became rich. New York City’s famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel is indirectly named for him and his birthplace (through the names of his descendants William Waldorf Astor and John Jacob Astor IV (the two hotels were originally separate, but later merged.)

A very smooth hosting job by David Faber –he’d be a GREAT full-time host (if he wants it, of course).

Andy, perhaps you can clear up a question? I looked at jeopardy.com to see where Matt places among all-time top winners, and only one 9-time winner is listed (Jason Keller). Didn’t Buzzy Cohen also win 9 games? Are there any other 9-time winners missing?

    Thanks
