Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, October 13, 2021

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Sports Legends) for Wednesday, October 13, 2021 (Season 38, Game 23):

When Johnny Bench broke his record, this man wrote, “I always thought the record would stand until it was broken”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Mary Garvey, a pastor from Huntingdon, Pennsylvania
Mary Garvey on Jeopardy!
Bilal Ali, a product manager from Seattle, Washington
Bilal Ali on Jeopardy!
Jonathan Fisher, an actor originally from Coral Gables, Florida (2-day total: $51,700)
Jonathan Fisher on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: A lot of fans are missing Matt Amodio’s run as champion, but after yesterday’s game, I think we can safely say that he was dethroned by a very worthy champion in Jonathan, who picked up a very strong total before Final Jeopardy. Moreover, this proves just how strong of a player Jessica was on Monday, who very nearly beat both Matt and Jonathan herself! Jonathan will be looking to extend his streak to 3 today against Mary and Bilal.

On a slightly more personal note: From October 16-23, there will be a 168-hour charity live-streaming relay on Twitch to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada; more information can be found at gamersvsms.ca. 1 in 385 Canadians live with MS. I’ll be doing my shift as part of the relay on Thursday, October 21 from 2:00 AM to 8:00 AM EDT on my own Twitch channel, twitch.tv/andythequizzer/.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

When Yogi Berra retired, he held MLB records for hits, runs, and home runs by a catcher; Cincinnati Reds catcher passed Berra’s home run mark in the summer of 1980, leading to a telegram and the aforementioned quote from Berra.

In 2015, Johnny Bench tweeted out the telegram that Berra sent him: “Congratulations on breaking my home run record last night. I always thought the record would stand until it was broken. It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Best of luck the rest of the season, but take it easy on Dale and the Pirates. Maybe we’ll see you in October. Yogi” (Dale was Yogi’s son who was an infielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates at the time.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Contestants should always wager in Final Jeopardy based on the game situation and not on the category, as even in a category that looks intimidating, you could always see a clue as straightforward as this one. It always amuses me greatly to see contestants run scared from a sports category, only to see the clue go 3/3 in Final.

13 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, October 13, 2021"

  1. How can you put yourself in a situation where you could have the correct answer in FJ…and still lose?

  2. I must confess, I have no idea what the FJ wagers was about. Everyone should try to win????????

  3. What the heck was Jonathan thinking when he wagered that??????? For my cup of tea, Mary’s wager was totally correct because in theory her only hope is that the Jonathan gets it wrong. But as Al Davis used to say…..”just win baby”.

    • I agree. I thought Mary might bet zero. Bilal couldn’t catch her, and from her position, you have to figure the leader has to miss for you to win. Jonathan took a chance, but he got lucky and it worked out.

  4. When they mentioned Johnny Bench’s home run record, I was wondering if it was the single season catchers’ one that Salvador Perez broke a few weeks ago. Turns out it was not.

  5. Interezting FJ wagers. Mary should have bet even less to guarantee beating Balal and would have no chance if Jonathan got it right – assuming he covered. Big surprise Jonathan didn’t cover. Maybe he guessed Mary’s (near) strategy. But probably not -more likely he just didn’t like the category.

  6. Considering that Dale Berra wasn’t a catcher, and wasn’t as famous like his dad, glad that the judges didn’t ask for a first name in the response.

  7. Unlikely but as others have said, I’d also like to see Jessica again. She and Jonathan were trading the lead back and forth near the end of DJ and either could have ended up leading going into FJ.

And Matt played a bad game including his wager in FJ which should have been less since his only hope was for both his opponents to miss. And with history and geography two of his best subjects really a surprise he got it wrong. I guess it’s possible he went for a “longshot” answer as his best hope figuring his opponents would pick the “obvious” answer.

  8. Now I’m curious about when this episode was taped. When Salvador Perez broke Bench’s single season record for home runs by a primary catcher (about a month ago), Bench tweeted his congratulations using that quote from Yogi. I wonder if that was the inspiration for this clue.

  9. Commenting from St. Louis, Yogi’s
    hometown:

If Yogi had been brought up on
charges by the Language Police, and
I had been his defense attorney, I
would have argued that his message
    was not idiosyncratic, incoherent,
or ungrammatical in any way: to wit,
    Yogi’s sentence “I always thought
the record would stand until it was
    broken” is exactly synonymous with
“Until it was broken (the previous
night, by Johnny Bench), I had
    always thought the record would
    stand.”

The word order is different, but
both versions are coherent and mean
the same thing. Yogi churned out a
lot of funny Yogiisms during his
lifetime, and who among us doesn’t
want to have our spirits lifted by
America’s late, great folk-philosopher–but it’s not at all
clear to me that the Johnny Bench
message was in fact a Yogiism.

    Congratulations, Yogi, on your
    commemorative stamp! What’s next?
    A U.S. coin? Currency?

  10. My favorite Yogiism. “ No one goes there anymore. Its too crowded.”

  11. Cranky Canuck | October 14, 2021 at 11:45 am |

Yogi Berra is supposed to have said “I really didn’t say everything I said.”
