Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, January 17, 2022

Happy Martin Luther King Day! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Scientific Names) for Monday, January 17, 2022 (Season 38, Game 91):

The 1905 paper that gave this its name also referred to it as “Dynamosaurus Imperiosus”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Jorge Quiñones, a front-end web developer from Boston, Massachusetts
Jorge Quinones on Jeopardy!
Frances Garrison, a high school English teacher from Hemet, California
Frances Garrison on Jeopardy!
Amy Schneider, an engineering manager from Oakland, California (33-day total: $1,111,800)
Amy Schneider on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Even though today is a holiday, Jeopardy! still airs today. Also note that there are pre-emptions in a number of major Western markets tonight, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland, as the Cardinals–Rams game kicks off on ABC at 8:15 PM Eastern (5:15 PM Pacific). Make sure you check your local listings to find the rescheduled airtime. As per my sources: Reno, Fresno, and Sacramento are planning on 9:00 PM (PT), Los Angeles and Seattle at 9:30 PM, Portland at 10:00 PM, and San Francisco at 10:30 PM.

In terms of the game: Amy returns to the studio as a 33-day champion. Ken in the past has made a bit of a deal about “the Monday Curse”—a lot of long-running champions have lost on a Monday. However, the first taping of the day has also been Amy’s strongest thus far. It’ll be interesting to see what happens today!

Today is also the first day of the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes. Winners will discover iconic, wild Alaska on an expedition aboard one of Lindblad’s 100-guest sister ships, National Geographic Quest or National Geographic Venture, accompanied by a team of naturalists, certified photo instructors, an undersea specialist and a wellness instructor.

To enter the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes, viewers are invited to tune-in to JEOPARDY! every weekday and enter the daily Final Jeopardy! category (today’s is Scientific Names) on the sweepstakes entry webpage, sweepstakes.jeopardy.com. Then, they will be entered for a chance to win an expedition for two exploring authentic Alaskan coastal wilderness from the unique vantage of a small ship. Each winner and their guest will receive round-trip coach-class air transportation from the winner’s closest major gateway airport, $1,000 US spending cash, as well as all shipboard accommodations, meals (excluding alcoholic beverages), and activities for travel valid in 2022 or 2023.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

In 1905, Henry Fairfield Osborn, then the president of the American Museum of Natural History, was tasked with naming a pair of dinosaur skeletons that were found in eastern Wyoming and in the Hell Creek Formation in Montana. Osborn named the two skeletons Tyrannosaurus Rex amd Dynamosaurus Imperiosus before realizing a year later that the different skeletons actually belonged to the same species, and selected Tyrannosaurus Rex as the preferred name of the species. Today, T. Rex is probably the best-known dinosaur species, with numerous depictions throughout popular culture.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • A friendly reminder to viewers that the show’s pronunciation rules are such that if a mispronunciation could reasonably be spelled the same way as a correct response, the mispronunciation is accepted. This is so as not to penalize those who learn by reading. The converse is also true—misspellings in Final Jeopardy are accepted as long as the misspelling could reasonably be pronounced the same way. (And yes, speaking of the number of people who get Sanders vs. Saunders mixed up in terms of spelling pronunciation, I would say that Amy’s spelling, missing a U, is perfectly acceptable to me.)

Another Final answer that seemed too easy, like “Oscar” recently, to be correct. Fortunately, I went with what I thought was the “obvious” choice this time, instead of thinking the writers were trying be tricky . . .

I guessed Tyrannosaurus Rex right away just based on the name similarity.
