Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, May 30, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category In Memoriam 2022) for Monday, May 30, 2022 (Season 38, Game 186):

On the death of this trailblazing man, friend & mentor, Oprah said, “For me, the greatest of the ‘great trees’ has fallen”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Steve Knapp, a middle school teacher from San Ramon, California
Steve Knapp on Jeopardy!
Mandy Walker, an account tech from Mount Juliet, Tennessee
Mandy Walker on Jeopardy!
Ryan Long, a rideshare driver from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11-day total: $209,300)
Ryan Long on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Ryan Long nearly lost on Friday, but he pulled out victory number 11! He spoke openly about how tired he was feeling at the end of last week’s tapings; hopefully he got a good night’s sleep and was able to show up to the studio refreshed to tape today’s game! If not, though, Mandy and Steve would love to become a giant killer and a Jeopardy! champion!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Sidney Poitier, the first African-American actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, for his role in 1963’s Lilies of the Field, passed away in early 2022 of cardiopulmonary failure. Poitier was one of the leading actors in Hollywood in the 1960s and received numerous honors throughout his career and later life, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1974. He also served as a Bahamian ambassador to Japan and UNESCO in the 1990s and 2000s.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round categories: The Midwest; Punny Mystery Titles; In the Sport’s Hall of Fame; Potpourri; On the Wall; Verb + “ER” = Noun

Today’s Jeopardy! round belonged to Ryan, as our champion picked up 13 correct responses, including the Daily Double! We thought Steve was going to end the round in third place, but a late incorrect response was overturned, meaning Mandy got to select first in Double Jeopardy.

Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Female Presidents; Stick to the Scripture; 18th Century Culture Club; The Animal in its Logo; TV Theme Songs; Portmanteau Words

The Daily Doubles proved to be crucial today; Ryan dropped $3,000 early, and Mandy picked up hers two-thirds of the way through the round. There will definitely be some confusion amongst home viewers as to what her bet was, which ended up crucial as her bet was somehow ruled to be $5,000 when she said just the word “five” (Which, to me, means $5, not $5,000.) Ryan led going into Final at $18,000, with Steve at $8,400 and Mandy at $4,800.

Final Jeopardy! today was a Triple Stumper, which turns the Daily Double into a moot point. Ryan Long’s now a 12-day champion! He’ll go for win #13 tomorrow.

Today’s interviews:
Steve recently got injured in a mosh pit at a Celtic punk show.
Mandy was on Child’s Play, hosted by Bill Cullen, at the age of 7.
Ryan was once a bouncer at a bar attacked by a raccoon.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I still don’t understand why the judges (or Mayim) permitted Mandy to just say “five” without disambiguating “five dollars”, “five hundred dollars” or “five thousand dollars”. To me, saying “five” can only mean a minimum bet of $5. This has caused controversy in the past in the other direction and will only serve to confuse viewers further in the future.
  • With regards to the score change affecting Steve: Remember that to go from an incorrect response to a correct one, you give the contestant twice the clue value (-$1,000 to +$1,000 is a $2,000 difference.)
  • Link to the box score: May 30, 2022 Box Score

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:
(Scores: Ryan $18,000 Steve $8,400 Mandy $4,800)

Ryan: Bet no more than $1,199 and enjoy win #12! (Actual bet: $1,000)

Mandy: If Steve bets to cover you and is wrong, he falls to $7,199. Your minimum bet should be $2,401. (Actual bet: $4,800)

Steve: Standard cover bet over Mandy is $1,201. (Actual bet: $2,000)

  1. Today I’m frustrated, not by anything that happened here, but by the fact that our local TV station had some sort of error with their syndication feed that prevented them from airing Friday’s Jeopardy! show. They have apparently been unable to resolve it since they promised to arrange to air it once they came up with a solution. But I can’t find anywhere to view Jeopardy! episodes missed through no fault of our own, which happens all too often with our local station. I’m very pleased to have read the results here and glad to see that Ryan lasted yet another day. But with all due respect, it’s not quite the same as seeing it “live” and trying to answer the questions as they arise.

So does anyone know if it’s possible to view missed episodes after they air (or don’t!)?

    • If your local affiliate is Sinclair-owned, they have a service called STIRR where past episodes are available “on demand” for a few days.

      Other than that? Not legally.

(Edit: Per the Site Comment policy, discussing non-legal methods on this site will result in a commenting ban without prior warning.)

    • It’s not the same as seeing it “real time” on the broadcast, but as far as testing yourself on the clues, have you looked at J-archive.com. The clues you missed are posted there.

  2. I was way off – I was thinking about John Lewis – the late US Representative from Georgia – but it turns out he died in 2020…..

tch I couldn’t come up with a guess, although reading the correct response does bring up a faint memory, like I might have heard about that quote on the news :/

    Current FJ streak: 1L

  4. There would’ve only been 2-3 months worth of notable deaths at the date of taping, I would’ve expected at least one player to get that recent bit of trivia. Probably going too far down Wikipedia rabbit holes and not paying attention to current events.

  5. Ryan is so good with those abbreviations: initialisms, portmanteaus, etc.

  6. Since this episode aired on Memorial Day, I thought Final would have a military tie-in so guessed General Colin Powell, a Black trailblazer.

    • Powell died in 2021. And while “In Memoriam” segments for shows like the Oscars includes those that have died since the previous show, my interpretation of the FJ category would be people that died in 2022

  7. At first I was going to say John Lewis but I immediately went to poitier. Still though this woulf have been a triple get if the players paid attention to events.

  8. Perhaps the judges asked Mandy what she meant by her “five” wager, and they just edited it from the broadcast. And while I haven’t done statistical research to verify, I’m thinking that there are far more DD bets are in thousand dollar increments than bets of “$5” or “$500”, so I have no issue with that being the default interpretation if the contestant doesn’t specify “five dollars” or “five hundred”

    • There was no observable edit between when she said, “Let’s do 5” and when the clue was revealed. The judges might have assumed she meant 5,000, since a bet like 5 or 500 wouldn’t have done her much good at that point.

  9. I remember it being reported that James Holzhauer was told by the judges that “two dimes” (or some other multiple of $1000) was not an acceptable Daily Double wager.

Ryan’s answer for animal logos of Penguin is a correct answer. I have some Penguin books.

    • Linda,

Penguin Books—where the logo is a penguin—and Pocket Books—where the logo is a kangaroo—are different publishers.

    • I have some magazines with a bunny logo. But that doesn’t make “bunny” a correct response to that clue

  11. Steve Knapp gave the wrong answer for the definition of UNHCR–it is the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, not Human Rights, and Mayim Bialik did not catch that.

    • Beverly: You’re incorrect.

The clue was about UNHCHR—note the second H—not UNHCR.

      • Brett Alan | May 31, 2022 at 2:28 pm |

Correct. And Mary Robertson, the subject of the clue, indeed was Commissioner for human rights, not for refugees. The show was correct.

I would’ve loved to see Mayim’s face when Ryan said “female tennis”.

    • That would have been interesting! Maybe Ryan thought there was a separate Hall for the women?
