Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, May 31, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Novel Quotes) for Tuesday, May 31, 2022 (Season 38, Game 187):

Referring to the book’s title, this character says, “I know it’s a poem by Robert Burns”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Carissa Faroughi, an architect from Falls Church, Virginia
Carissa Faroughi on Jeopardy!
Kenny Liew, a software engineer originally from Los Angeles, California
Kenny Liew on Jeopardy!
Ryan Long, a rideshare driver from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12-day total: $226,300)
Ryan Long on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Ryan Long is now at 12 wins after the fourth runaway of his run in yesterday’s game. Today, Kenny Liew and Carissa Faroughi enter the studio to do battle with our latest long-running champion. Will the streak end today, or will Ryan enter the second month of his run?

Another thing that I think is important to point out: No, Ryan isn’t as dominant as some of the other champions. But that doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter whether you win by $1 or by $50,000—they both count the same in the standings.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: Who is Holden Caulfield?

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, now including Matt Amodio, Jonathan Fisher, and Amy Schneider, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2022 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Holden Caulfield is the protagonist and narrator of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye; in Chapter 22, he is in a discussion with his sister Phoebe.

“You know that song ‘If a body catch a body comin’ through the rye? I’d like—”
“It’s ‘If a body meet a body coming through the rye’!” Old Pheobe said. It’s a poem. By Robert Burns.”
“I know it’s a poem by Robert Burns.”
She was right, though. It is “If a body meet a body coming through the rye.” I didn’t know it then, though.

One thing I’d like to point out: This will be an easier clue for players in-studio compared to viewers at home. This clue is going to be tricky for home viewers to ascertain whether the show is looking for the book or the character (for the record, the show has consistently used the word “this” to refer to what the show wants, but that distinction is often lost on viewers at home, and I expect that I’ll see lots of complaints from less-than-perfectly-attentive home viewers.) However, one thing that will greatly assist the players in-studio is that in order to ensure that no player forgets to phrase their response in the form of a question, the show has, for many decades now, told the players the first word of the question (which, in this case, would be a very clear “Who”). Obviously, because “Who is The Catcher in the Rye” is essentially nonsensical in this context, that would be a major pointer that the show will be looking for a character and not the work, one that will hopefully prevent players from making a crucial “read the question” error.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round categories: Word Puzzles; Mayors; Book of the Year; Wood; Send a Letter; Musicians Selling Music

Today’s game started off slowly, with plenty of Triple Stumpers and incorrect responses. However, Ryan found his footing when he ran MUSICIANS SELLING MUSIC right before the break, and the rout was on! He ended up with 15 correct responses in Single Jeopardy! (to Kenny’s 3 and Carissa’s 2) en route to an $8,000 lead.

Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Medieval Times; It Only Borders One Country; Science; It’s a Flat-Out Fact; SNL Cast Members on Film; Going “Pro”

Ryan’s most dominant performance thus far in his run continued in Double Jeopardy!, with Ryan getting 16 correct to push himself past the 300 correct response mark. Unfortunately for Kenny, he needed to find the final Daily Double, and it ended up being Carissa who found it. Ryan had a stunning $28,400 after Double Jeopardy, to Kenny’s $6,800 and Carissa’s $4,200.

Ryan’s missing Final Jeopardy! was immaterial for his picking up win #13, while Kenny picked up some pride and the extra thousand by being the only player to get Final. Ryan will start June tomorrow by attempting to get win #14!

  1. No, I knew it was looking for the character. It was just a friggin’ hard clue.

    • Michael Johnston | May 31, 2022 at 2:48 pm |

I got the gist of the clue also, but all I know about The Catcher in the Rye is who wrote it 🙁 I’ll have to get around to reading it one of these days.

      Current FJ streak: 2L

  2. Yep, I thought book title of which I had no clue. Let alone the character.

  3. I first thought of Of Mice and Men/To A Mouse ..Lenny/George..nothing more

  4. Only thing that came to me was Scout Finch – but it had been Atticus who said that “it was a sin to kill a mocking bird”

  5. Okay, so Ryan’s FJ answer made me laugh. Congrats on win Lucky 13 Ryan!

  6. “No, Ryan isn’t as dominant as some of the other champions.”
Thank goodness for that! Most of Ryan’s games (with the exception of today’s rout) have remained competitive through FJ, with a few just barely becoming runaways at the end. Makes for more enjoyable viewing than those “other champions” who usually had the game locked up halfway through DJ. I appreciated the same thing during Mattea’s run.

  7. I appreciate your insight on how the show gives contestants the “Who”/”What”/etc. for FJ. Though as Matt Amodio demonstrated (albeit in the opposite), that one could phrase it as “Who is the Catcher in the Rye?” and that would be an acceptable response if they were in fact looking for the book title. (also, who IS the catcher in the rye? I’ve never read the novel, nor the Burns poem)

    • I’m with you JJ. I usually don’t have a favorite contestant, I just like to see a competitive game with a meaningful FJ. I love it when everybody has over $10K going into Final.

  8. I somehow got this question correct. I got a general sense of teenage angst from the quote and from this I assumed Holden Caulfield. Complete educated guess on this one.

  9. Count me as another who went to the wrong Burns poem. I’d have gone with Lenny myself.

  10. Commenting on Mayim’s assertion that Ryan is the fourth player in the Top Ten this season.

Technically, he is the fifth player, as Jonathon Fisher was also in the Top Ten at the end of his run. Crazy though!
