With four weeks to go in this season of Jeopardy!, Villanova basketball fan Eleanor Dixon picked up the victory on Friday after wagering their last NCAA championship year—$2,018—on a Daily Double. Today’s challengers are LA public defender Yungsheng Wang and Geneva, New York educator Andie Huskie.
Editorially: I’m a little bit angry this weekend, because the tabloids saw fit to accuse Mayim Bialik of making a mistake during Final Jeopardy! on Friday when she did not make a mistake—Dave’s spelling of French Guiana of “French Guyana” is not an incorrect response; this long-standing precedent has even been made abundantly clear on the Jeopardy! website for five and a half years. Three incorrect Jeopardy! fans on Twitter are not reason to write a clickbait article and these journalists need to do better research.
On a more personal note: For the past two and a half years, I have often raised money for the MS Society of Canada through their “Gamers vs. MS” program. This July, Gamers vs. MS is running a month-long fundraising campaign called “Boss Battles.” In an attempt to raise $25,000, the Gamers vs. MS team has designed a “fundraising adventure” to defeat eight evil bosses. Following the 1810 census, Vermont’s population (217,713) was such that it was given 6 Congressional representatives; unfortunately, due to increased population elsewhere in the Union, by 1820, it was reduced to 5. Vermont’s representation was reduced to 4 following the 1840 census, to 3 following the 1850 census, to 2 following the 1880 census, and to 1 following the 1930 census.

Yungsheng and Andie got off to the best start with today’s game; Eleanor struggled for most of the game to get in on the signalling device. Buoyed by $1,000 on the Daily Double, Yungsheng held the lead after both 15 and 30 clues!

Eleanor got the opportunity to bet $2,016—Villanova’s other recent championship—on the third Daily Double. Unfortunately, it was in a situation where she probably needed to bet more, as she was just over $4,000 down to the lead. Andie played well enough to hold the lead in spite of a missed Daily Double herself, thanks to a correction and the judges listening to the tape! Meanwhile, Yungsheng had six incorrect responses in the game, leading to him sitting second going into Final! Scores going into Final were Andie at $12,200, Yungsheng at $11,800, and Eleanor at $5,784.
Yungsheng was the only correct player in Final; he becomes the new Jeopardy! champion, winnings $22,800! He’ll get to defend his title tomorrow.

- The judges often go to the tape to make a judging review. I would like to make it abundantly clear that it is 100% inappropriate to criticise Mayim Bialik for the judges making an overrule—especially so if you’re a journalist looking to pin this as a mistake on Mayim Bialik.
- I also think that Jeopardy! fans in general are much too nitpicky when it comes to the host’s rulings. It’s, quite frankly, tiresome for me to watch so-called fans rush to their keyboards on a nightly basis to find fault and attempt to one-up the show on everything possible.

If you know or can figure out which states have only one seat in the House of Representatives, you should be able to answer this. Vermont is the logical one and Delaware would never have had 6 seats.
I knew Eastern narrowed it to Vermont and Delaware and I went with the former just because it’s bigger, figuring maybe it used to be relatively more populous.

And what would be attributed to the decline?
It never really was that populous—it’s just that other states became relatively more populous compared to Vermont over time.
As a ratio to rest of the country, it was more populous than now – which doesn’t mean it was populous, just moreso.

The word “peak” was likely also a big clue.
The ports on Lake Champlain were of substantial commercial and military importance in the 18th and 19th centuries. Not as much in later times.

No offense, but what are you talking about? Yungsheng gained $1,000 on his daily double, Andie lost $3,000 and Eleanor lost $2,016. This resulted in a net loss on Daily Doubles of $4,016. How did you come up with a “Net Gain on Daily Doubles: $2”? I’m at a loss to figure out what you actually mean. Please explain for this confused old man. Thank you. 😕

It just occurred to me that, maybe, you were referring to Eleanor’s two Daily Doubles from Friday and today. She gained 2018 one day and lost 2016 the next for a net gain of $2. Is that it? I think I figured it out.😊

And……………, if memory serves, her score after Final was $1985, and 1985 was when Villanova upset Georgetown to win its first NCAA Men’s Basketball title.
It’s hard to believe that some Jeopardy! fans by now don’t realize that the host of the show has no is not responsible for the overturning of responses. But blame the host anyway—as in Mayim. If they blame her, then they may as well blame Alex for the 36 years of overturning responses.

Jeopardy is shown in Chicago at 3:30 and I hope ABC is back to regular programming by then. But there has been a mass shooting in Highland Park at a parade. Police say 5 people are deceased and 16 were taken to the hospital. The shooter is still at large.
coverage events like that that occur locally should definitely take precedence over game shows on the local networks in those areas. (as should severe weather event coverage).

In response to Andy’s thoughts, Alex Trebek also had his share of being overruled by the judges. As for Mayim, I’m afraid there are too many people out there that, for reasons only they can explain, are inherently biased against her.
Yes, he did, and Alex also made mistakes in his early years. I suspect he would be appalled at all the chirping about Mayim, especially as he always said the show is about the contestants, not the host!

I knew it was vermont right away as i have been there before. Still not as populous. Still though this was a good clue and good to see a solve today. Congrats to yungsheng
tabloids are trash year round anyway, and half the time don’t even know what they are talking about. Best to ignore them completely.
I will admit, of the two of them, I prefer Ken over Mayim as the host. But I agree with you about the overly harsh attacks on Mayim for these calls that are ultimately made by the judges, not the host. The Harriet Tubman call a week or two ago also earned her a lot of flak for a call that the judges are ultimately making.
