Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, July 1, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category World Geography) for Friday, July 1, 2022 (Season 38, Game 210):

Mont Bellevue de l’Inini is the highest point in this European possession largely covered by the Amazon rainforest

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Shayan Sadegh, a medical scribe from Potomac, Maryland
Shayan Sadegh on Jeopardy!
Eleanor Dixon, a freelance technical editor from Vero Beach, Florida
Eleanor Dixon on Jeopardy!
Dave Bzdak, a philosophy professor from Syracuse, New York (1-day total: $2,000)
Dave Bzdak on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Triple Stumpers in Final Jeopardy! have certainly kept the winnings down this week; yesterday’s winner Dave Bzdak won yesterday with just $2,000! But the more important thing is that the champion gets the opportunity to come back tomorrow to try to win more money; Dave will try to do that against Eleanor Dixon and Shayan Sadegh!

On a more personal note: For the past two and a half years, I have often raised money for the MS Society of Canada through their “Gamers vs. MS” program. This July, Gamers vs. MS is running a month-long fundraising campaign called “Boss Battles.” In an attempt to raise $25,000, the Gamers vs. MS team has designed a “fundraising adventure” to defeat eight evil bosses. (Much like a Mario game might have eight bosses to defeat.) You can get more information about the program at https://www.gamersvsms.ca/bossbattles.

Also, a heads-up to those who watch the show on WXPI in Pittsburgh: Starting Monday, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! are switching time slots; Jeopardy! will be airing in Pittsburgh at 7:30, while Wheel of Fortune moves to 7:00.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

French Guiana is an overseas department of France located in South America, bordering Suriname and Brazil; the Guiana Space Centre is located there, which is the European Space Agency’s primary equatorial launch site. It is the only one of the five original Guyanas—French, Spanish (now part of Venezuela), Dutch (now Suriname), British (now Guyana), and Portuguese (now part of Brazil)—to still be held by its colonizing country.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: On A Holiday; U.S. Cities; Animals & The Law; Fruits & Vegetables in French; Game Plan; “X”s & “O”s)

Eleanor had the best time over the first 15 clues, picking up 6 correct responses; Dave had 2 incorrect, including the Daily Double, to set himself back. Coming out of the break, Eleanor had a couple of incorrect responses herself to keep her score down, but she did keep the lead.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: One-Word Nonfiction Titles; Filmed in Georgia; It’s a Process; 20th Century Names; A Disaster of Biblical Proportions; Italian Loanwords)

Dave found the second Daily Double, and unfortunately missed his second wagering clue of the day. Then, Shayan went on a run of his own, jumping out into a lead! Eleanor then found Daily Double #3 and wagered the unusual amount of $2,018. She then got clue #30 for $2,000 to propel her into the lead going into Final! Scores going into Final were Eleanor at $12,218, Shayan at $10,400, and Dave at $6,600.

For the first time in a very long time, three players got Final Jeopardy! correct. Eleanor bet to cover and will return Monday as champion!

Dave: If Eleanor bets to cover and is incorrect, she falls to $3,635. You should limit your bet to $2,964. You should also bet at least $1,001, as Shayan falls to $7,599 if he makes the minimum cover bet with you. (Actual bet: $3,801)

Eleanor: Standard cover bet over Shayan is $8,583. (Actual bet: $8,600)

Shayan: Standard cover bet over Dave is $2,801. (Actual bet: $2,801)

What if someone spelled it French Guyana. Would it be deemed a correct response.

  2. Michael Johnston | July 1, 2022 at 11:50 am |

@Raul Rinto – I thinkk the general guideline for FJ is that misspellings that are phonetically the same are still acceptable.

grumble I could only think of Suriname. I hate long losing streaks😝

    Current FJ streak: 4L

  3. Yay! Yay for not only the triple-get, but someone betting a random number on a Daily Double. That gives me a sense of joy that I can’t really explain. (And yes, I also got Final.)

  4. Finally happy to see a triple solve after that dry spell of triple stumpers. Congrats to all the players today. South american geographt us my forte as I knew what this was.

  5. Love a triple get!

  6. I take issue with the fact that they accepted “Who is Johnson?” when there have been multiple presidents with the last name “Johnson”. Could someone say “who is Bush?” on a clue without having to specify between George HW and George W?

    • I assume the judges were thinking that a contestant would be unlikely to think that Lyndon B. Johnson was President in 1868 (which seems like a reasonable assumption to me).

  7. What was the information Shayan said about how he tested himself before he went on Jeopardy
    Thank you

  8. Heavy on the Romance languages today. Surprised that they included the French and Italian categories in the same episode.
