Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, September 23, 2022

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the September 23, 2022 game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Literary Characters) for Friday, September 23, 2022 (Season 39, Game 10):

In a later part of the epic named for him, this character becomes king after his cousin Heardred dies in battle

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Navid Mehrjou, an attorney from Elmhurst, New York
Navid Mehrjou on Jeopardy!
Jenny Dally, a curatorial assistant from San Francisco, California
Jenny Dally on Jeopardy!
Michael Menkhus, a data analyst from Kansas City, Missouri (1-day total: $31,201)
Michael Menkhus on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Had you not watched last night’s game and only seen a tabloid article about it, you would have received an inferior interpretation regarding what happened in the game, as much of the narrative claimed that it was a simple matter of buzzer timing. However, the box score of last night’s game paints a significantly different picture. As per last night’s boxscore, Michael had significantly more buzzer attempts than either of his two challengers. That’s one reason I absolutely love that executive producer Michael Davies instituted box scores in January—it paints a more authentic picture of what happens every night on the show.

Beowulf is one of the most important works of Old English literature; J.R.R. Tolkien—one of the world’s foremost Beowulf scholars, even though he is much better known by the public for his Middle-Earth writings—firmly believed that Beowulf dated back to the 8th century. Later in the over-3,000-line epic, Heardred—who had been proclaimed King due to Beowulf’s positive character reference—died in battle and was succeeded by the famed hero Beowulf.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Michael $11,400 Navid $8,600 Jenny $4,600)

Michael: Standard cover bet over Navid is $5,801. (Actual bet: $5,801)

Jenny: You should bet at least $3,401 in order to defend against the possibility that Navid might make a small cover bet over you. (Actual bet: $4,001)

Navid: If Michael bets to cover you and is incorrect, he falls to $5,599. You should bet between $601 (therefore covering Jenny) and $2,999 (staying ahead of Michael if you both miss). (Actual bet: $8,500)

The phrasing had me scratching my head for a bit, but once I sorted it out the solution came quickly – “Béowulf is mín nama”😁

  2. Hopefully the contestants can spell “Beowulf” correctly!!

  3. I was thinking of something in northern Europe (as opposed to the Mediterranean) but came up short 🙁

Best wishes to anyone affected (or to be affected)0 by Hurricane Fiona -especially Andy in NL

    • Thank you!

Fortunately, it’ll be tracking west enough of where I am such that it’s likely just going to be “a normal breezy fall day” for us. But best wishes to anyone in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and western Newfoundland for sure.

      • thanks from Canada’s Ocean Playground (though not today :-)) – it looks like we’re really going to get it

  4. Two corgi references on the same day! Did they know something about the queen during the recording?

  5. This one was a no brainer as I remember beowolf pretty much in grade school. Happy to see Navid and Michael getting final right today. Still though I would have loved to see an additional 5000 dollars added into Michael’s score with the triple stumpers. A pretty good game for our returning champ. Keep it going Mike

Praying for the people in PEI Nova Scotia and New Brunswick that they can survive the hurricane up in Canada!

  6. I could get the one today, but with no serious knowledge – all I knew is what I heard from my kid from her school work.

  7. I my, took until today to get a FJ correctly. In my head “the demon grim was Grendel called…”. Don’t know if that is part of the translation or just a phrase that an instructor used. Good weekend with safety for all.

  8. Love that Ken was giving alternate acceptable responses. Very helpful for play-at-home.

Anyone know what the holdup with the box score is?

  9. Andy, are you planning to provide info on “Celebrity Jeopardy!” apparently starting today (Sunday, September 25th)?
