Today is November 30; Cris Pannullo has had a bit of a rough week—he’s been challenged in both of his first two games this week. However, he has pulled out victories in those games, which means that he gets to play for victory #18 tonight! Jeannette Bonjour and Randall Rayford are today’s challengers.
Meanwhile: November 30 is a pretty important day in Jeopardy! history—obviously, today is the 18th anniversary of Ken Jennings’ defeat. It’s also the 18th anniversary of the official launch of J! Archive! Over the past 18 years, we have managed to enter just over 85% of the show’s games. Getting to 90% seems like a realistic goal for the 19th year — a complete archive for the 20th anniversary of J! Archive feels ambitious but possible.
November 30 is also my father’s birthday—many times in interviews, I’ve said that my father’s love of Jeopardy!, and how he would watch the show’s early seasons, is one of the main reasons why I am a Jeopardy! fan myself. So, happy birthday, Dad!

As you can see, the 27 stars on Brazil’s flags are arranged in various constellations, including Canis Minor, Scorpius, Hydra, and the Southern Cross.
A fun fact that I’m reminded about the U.S. flag: there are nine horizontal rows of stars on the American flag—yes, that fact has come up in Final Jeopardy!; it was a Triple Stumper back in 1991.

Cris got the Daily Double very early, which gave Randall space to make this a competitive match through most of the first round of play! Jeannette struggled a lot on the signalling device early on, not getting in until clue #22! Cris led after 30.

However, Cris’ lead stayed just enough to keep a runaway, even though it was threatened late! Scores going into Final were Cris at $28,800, Randall at $12,600, and Jeannette at $3,600.

I knew that Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, is located in a “federal district”. That gave me the clue I needed, together with “our hemisphere”(which to me meant only the Western one!) and the country’s size. I didn’t remember Brazil’s flag, but in the end didn’t need to.
The church I go to is very cosmopolitan with people from many different countries, including all of the hemispheres. Over the entrance to the sanctuary are flags representing dozens of different countries. Prominent among the different flags is the flag of Brazil with its 27 stars. Having seen that every Sunday for many years, the correct response came to me immediately. I also taught the International Class at my church for a few years and had several students from Brazil (so that helped, too). Mexico doesn’t fit the clue due to an absence of stars, and Venezuela has only 8 stars.
Brazil is not in “our hemisphere”. What am I missing?
The fact that Brazil has land north of the Equator notwithstanding:

Caught an error in a clue. The Burnside Bridge over the Willamette River in Portland OR divides the city east and west, not north and south. Or maybe they meant the river runs north and south? If so, the clue was confusing. (I find more than a few clues confusing!) Fun fact: the Willamette is the only major river in the US that flows from the south to the north, and then into the Columbia.
Some of the clues are confusing if you happen to know more about the subject. I remember a clue from a few years ago, something about what is 20 miles south of San Diego, and it was Tijuana. (Or the clue could have been vice versa, it’s been so long…) But anyway, Tijuana is right on the border with San Diego, since San Ysidro is right on the border and is considered part of San Diego City. So being from here I thought they were talking further south, maybe Rosarito.
The subject of the sentence is the Burnside Bridge, so they’re saying the bridge divides the city north and south. This still seems a bit strange as the bridge spans only the river, and not the entire city.
The St. Johns river in Florida also flows from the South to the North. It is 310 miles long.
Somehow I knew as soon as the clue came up for this game’s tFinal Jeopardy, that the correct response was Brazil. Maybe I remembered that besides the US, Brazil’s flagis the only one in the Western hemisphere with more than two stars. However I knew it was Brazil, sort of makes up for yesterday when it would’ve been a producers call to see if my answer would have been accepted. Andy thought it probably would have been. But having the correct response with out having to get the producerw involved is a bonus.
