William Bligh was the famous captain of the HMS Bounty, whose crew mutinied in 1789 and set Bligh adrift; the mutineers settled on Tahiti and Pitcairn Island, while Bligh survived, captained an open boat to Timor, and began the process of apprehending the mutineers.

Bligh’s memoirs are available on the Gutenberg Project.

Who is Kevin McCarthy… Um I mean Who is Captain Bligh?

  2. Michael Johnston | January 6, 2023 at 10:57 am |

tch Well, I got The Bounty part right but I guessed the principal who did NOT leave a written account, Fletcher Christian 😔

Missed a shot at a winning week, but at least I didn’t have a losing one either, thanks to the pickup of Einstein from last night’s Celebrity FJ! 3-3 for the week.

    Current FJ streak: 1L

  3. AAArgh! The evil Captain Bligh will always be Charles Laughton!

  4. Well, now I don’t feel so bad guessing Cook.

  5. Bligh was the only one I can think of. Besides I have heard of the HMS bounty even in books and movies lately. Happy to see Reuben getting the final today. Congrats to patrick on a runaway and the win

We know it was not Cook. He was killed in 1776. (BTW, Bligh was there. He was Cook’s sailing master). The date (1789) and the Polynesian names pretty much lead to a conclusion that it had to be the Bounty (and either Christian or Bligh) or La Perouse. I assumed that La Perouse is too obscure (although those of us from Hawaii know about him) and the nature of the questions sounded like what Bligh (an amazing Mariner who gets far too much bad press) had to do when put into a small boat. SO I quickly jumped to Bligh.

    • Yeah, Captain Bligh made way more sense, but I momentarily couldn’t think of the captain’s name and went with Fletcher Christian.

  7. I put Cook down because he was the only captain I could come up with by name, and I was pretty sure the judges wouldn’t accept “the guy cut adrift after the Mutiny on the Bounty.” I wasn’t sure when Cook had the incident with the natives that had led to his eventual demise off the top of my head, just “late 1700s,” but I was pretty sure I was wrong. Lo and behold. The Bounty is the most prominent name from the event, but that would have been way too easy for FJ using the info from this clue.

I end the week 3 for 5 (haven’t seen the Celebrity Jeopardy yet). Not bad.

Having seen “Mutiny on The Bounty” on the big screen in 1962, I can still see it in my mind’s eye. The movie was shot in Technicolor and Ultra Panavision so it really made an impression on me when seen on a large movie theater screen back in those days. Because of that, I was able to come up with Captain Bligh immediately. The movie was a magnificent sight back in the day. I’m old, lol.

  9. If they had answered “What’s love got to do with it?” Is that correct or would they have to say “What is what’s love got to do with it?”
