Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Famous Names) for Thursday, February 23, 2023 (Season 39, Game 119):
For a special 1970s cookbook, he provided one simple recipe–a can of Campbell’s tomato soup & 2 cans of milk
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Teagan O’Sullivan, a first-year student at American University from Watertown, Massachusetts![]() |
Shriya Yarlagadda, a sophomore at Harvard University from Grand Blanc, Michigan![]() |
Justin Bolsen, a first-year student at Brown University from Canton, Georgia![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
We’re on to Thursday, and on to Quarterfinal #4 of the 9 quarterfinals of the High School Reunion Tournament. Today’s quarterfinal features three semifinalists from the 2019 Teen Tournament: Justin Bolsen, Shriya Yarlagadda, and Teagan O’Sullivan. All three players were generally pretty evenly-matched stat-wise in 2019; I’m expecting to see a closely-contested match in this quarterfinal today.

In 1977, Andy Warhol contributed an incredibly on-brand recipe to The Museum of Modern Art’s Artist’s Cookbook: a can of Campbell’s condensed tomato soup and 2 cans of milk. To cook, you bring the soup and milk to a boil, stir, and serve. Salvador Dali also contributed a recipe for a red salad, including smoked tongue. The Marginalian republished that recipe in 2016.

There’s no better feeling than throwing out a joke guess and having it be correct 😊
When I think of a famous name and Campbell Soup, Andy Warhol is the only guess I got. And of course, Warhol’s most well known quote contains the word ‘famous’, so one might unconsciously also think of Warhol when seeing that word.
I know “soup” and “1970’s” should be an instant Pavlov for Andy Warhol, but I didn’t know based off of just that. I think if painter was included in the clue, it would have made it easier to get to the right answer, but it might have made it too easy. But regardless, I’m still happy that I managed to get to the right answer!
Yes, that would have been too easy. I don’t even think they should have included the word Campbell’s.
Yes, this was way too easy as written. Agree with you, Lisa, that not including the word “Campbell’s” would have made people have to think a little bit more, but even then, it would still have been fairly easy just because of the inclusion of tomato soup which was pretty much all you needed to come up with the correct response.
The Campbell’s Tomato Soup clinched it for me.
Last night’s game was so much fun. It proves that, when it comes to Jeopardy!, you just cannot predict who is going to win.
These players are young. I’m hoping that they all get Warhol.
Yeah, it’s so obvious I wonder if anyone will overthink it. Young people might not get the connection, I imagine.
Within 1 second I saw Campbell’s and told my girlfriend I have a guess (Warhol) … this seems almost too easy and saying a painter/artist would be way too easy, this at least makes people think of cooks or something.
I figured since Warhol was behind the Velvet Underground (as producer) in addition to pop art that recipes wouldn’t exactly be branching out too much for him. Just put him down because of the Campbell’s soup. Happy to have been right!
Nice to see Justin getting redemption and not being “once bitten, twice shy” when it comes to True Daily Doubles! I understand why he’s not considered the favorite to win at this point, but I can see him being very dangerous in the semifinals. And his gesture after being announced the winner was really sweet 😊
The campbell’s tomato soup definitely clinched it for me. Andy Warhol was the obvious choice here. He was mentioned in the Geosafari Great Art history quiz once. It”s good to see everyone getting this final right.
I thought one of the clues in the College Football category today was ambiguous to the point of being unfair. It cost Shriya $1,000. Her response was LSU, which is not correct because they don’t play Southern Univ in the Bayou Classic. However when a clue says “the Tigers of this state university of Louisiana,” that’s basically goading somebody into saying LSU. It wasn’t a well written clue.
And at the $1,000 level, there’s no way you’re being spotted “Louisiana”, “State”, “University” and “Tigers” in a clue about LSU. The clue was written as intended, and the show has been doing this for 40 years.
I agree and in the cases where someone is clearly the underdog on buzzer skills, it is nice to cause them to get a chance to respond after someone else has slipped up. Since ‘Bayou’ implies Louisiana (even if you don’t know that it is a “classic rivalry” game between Grambling and Southern University rather than an invitational “bowl”), I suspect they actually added the unnecessary ‘Louisiana’ at the end of the clue to try to trip up someone speedy. As I implied, not to be malicious, just to “mix it up”
that clue wasn’t ambiguous at all. There was only one correct response.
Plus it featured two HBCU programs during Black History Month
they could’ve included this HBCU, but, adding that might’ve made it too easy.
The “Campbell’s” name was the giveaway. By the way, I really am enjoying this tournament. 😊
to me the category, famous names, and, the clue featuring Campbell’s Tomato soup was an instant “get.” As soon as Mayim read the clue, I said who was Warhol? And, like all three of this games players, I was right.
