Dan Wohl took full advantage of his Daily Double yesterday, unseating 4-day champion Matthew Marcus in runaway fashion! He perfectly demonstrated what it takes to win when you’re up against a strong player. It’s the type of play that I’d like to see more of from everyone. Daily Doubles are generally easier than Final Jeopardy—it’s okay to play the Daily Doubles aggressively! Today’s challengers are Portland writer Mira Hayward and St. Petersburg professor Scott Perry.

Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up was first a play (seven years before it became a novel) that debuted at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London’s West End in December of 1904. Gerald du Maurier (father of famed writer Daphne) portrayed Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, while Nina Boucicault portrayed Peter, as the regulations of the time prohibited children from performing on stage. Thus, in the tradition of pantomime, Boucicault portrayed Peter. This began the tradition of having a woman portray Peter Pan.

I had it at harness. As a young child I remember sitting in front of a B&W TV as Mary Martin flew across the screen in the title role wearing a “flying harness.” To me, Mary Martin will always be synonymous with Peter Pan.
Yes, Mary Martin was my first Peter Pan followed by Sandy Duncan. And yes, I guessed correctly.
I took two 5 year olds to see it in Chicago and she was Peter Pan. We were in the front row in the balcony and both girls told me on the way home that they thought they would be able to touch her when she flew.
“harness” gives it away. Glad for that extra hint, because I knew nothing about Ms. Boucicault and the significance of the year would have escaped me.
Yes, “harness” did it for me, too. And yes, I saw it live as a kid.
I agree with the others that “harness” gave it a way. Plus era was right.
As a theater major, seeing “Nina Boucicault” and “1904” pointed me straight to Peter Pan. The “harness” hint sealed the deal. Easy get!
I can’t blame Dan for his small wager on the last daily double. If he goes for a runaway, and misses, he has no chance in final jeopardy. And I guess he figured he had a better chance with 30 seconds to come up with a correct response than under the pressure of the daily double. Actuarial tables may show he had a better chance with the daily double, but some times you just have to go with your gut.
It’s a funny game… I thought, when I read the FJ! clue this morning, “This might be a triple get!”, but maybe the pressure of the moment hindered the other two?
Speaking of pressure, I note that FJ! has a type of pressure not found in the DDs, which is the lack of a safety net. No clues after that might pick you up if you falter here.
That’s what I’d thought about “a triple get”, too.
The harness hint gave it away. I knew Peter Pan because I remember the disney version and I saw a school play based on Peter Pan in elementary school years ago. Dan didn’t have much a of chance in final jeopardy as theater is not his forte. I went with my gut on this response. Happy to see Mira winning today
Dan’s bold DD bet helped him to win the game yesterday. His failure to make a bold DD bet cost him the game today.
I was surprised that this was not a triple get. It seemed to me to be obvious. Although I would likely have risked most of it in the last daily double…..
As soon as I saw “harness”, I knew it had to be James M Barrie’s PETER PAN! Aside from her role in South Pacific, Peter Pan is my favorite Mary Martin role!
It was really nice to see a woman win for a change. I’m hoping that Mira can go on to win enough games to make it to the ToC. So far, this season, all the contestants with three or more wins seem to be men. Congratulations to Mira, and here’s wishing her good luck to go on to win a few more.
As others have indicated, “wearing a harness,” gave it to me instantly which made me think it would be a triple get. As an aside, my sister played Wendy sometime in the 1950’s.
I, too, tend to pull for the women contestants to get the win in most games, especially in a season like this one where the large majority of games have been won by guys.
So I definitely enjoyed today’s game.
The image of Eliza Doolittle and Mother Courage (and her children!) suspended from the rafters in harnesses… well, theatre just doesn’t get better than that.
