Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Transportation USA) for Tuesday, March 28, 2023 (Season 39, Game 142):
This public agency runs the USA’s busiest bus terminal, opened in 1950 for commuters awed by its polished steel & stone
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Lisa Sriken, a lawyer from New York, New York![]() |
Mara Lasko, a fundraiser from Washington, D.C.![]() |
Nicole Rudolph, an associate dean from Williston Park, New York (1-day total: $16,800)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Last night’s Jeopardy! saw Nicole Rudolph win her first game in runaway fashion! Today, she faces off against Washington, D.C.’s Mara Lasko and New York lawyer Lisa Sriken.
A couple of interesting things that I think it’s important to point out/remind everyone: Jeopardy! turns 59 years old on Thursday as the show celebrates its second Jeoparday—like last year, anyone is welcome to take the Jeopardy! Anytime Test on Thursday, and the show will be donating $5.90 to pancreatic cancer research for the first 10,000 people who do take the Anytime Test this coming Thursday.
Another interesting thing: Buzzy Cohen will be hosting a new podcast about the show’s history, titled This Is Jeopardy!; the first episode will be released on April 26.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

I don’t normally make predictions about Final Jeopardy!, but just from where our players are located today—Nicole from Long Island and Lisa from New York—I get a sense that at least two players will get today’s Final.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (I’m assuming that just “Port Authority” will be OK here, but I don’t know how much more will be required) operates much of the transportation infrastructure within a 25-mile radius of the Statue of Liberty, including the United States’ busiest bus terminal: the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th Avenue, one block east of the Lincoln Tunnel (in fact, there is a direct connection between the tunnel and the terminal, to prevent significant bus traffic on Midtown Manhattan streets.)
Coming back to the first paragraph: I believe that the Port Authority Bus Terminal is well-known enough for anyone around North America to be able to come up with a correct response. I myself—a Canadian—have even traveled via that bus terminal.

In a round where high-valued incorrect responses kept the scores down, Lisa got the final clue played of Double Jeopardy! to both break Nicole’s runaway and bring everyone back into contention going into Final Jeopardy!—the scores going into Final made for a very interesting situation where Nicole’s score equaled Lisa’s plus Mara’s exactly! Scores going into Final were Nicole at $9,600, Lisa at $5,400, and Mara at $4,200.
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Nicole got to spend some time at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- I found FANCIFIED BEASTLY IDIOMS $400 to be amusing; the writers have been finding interesting ways of writing clues about “(don’t) let the cat out of the bag” for pretty much the entirety of the history of the show.
- Today’s box score: March 28, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Nicole $9,600 Lisa $5,400 Mara $4,200)
Nicole: Standard cover bet over Lisa is $1,201. Don’t bet any more than this, because this forces Mara to go all-in from third. (Actual bet: $1,201)
Mara: Because Nicole falls to $8,399 if she’s incorrect, you have one good bet—all $4,200—anything else greatly reduces your chances of winning. (Actual bet: $4,000)
Lisa: Bet between $3,001 (covering Mara) and $5,398 (thereby staying ahead of anything that would give Mara an actual chance of winning the game.) (Actual bet: $4,201)

I have to admit that they’re both sucky bus terminals, I actually would rate the Albany, NY bus terminal as slightly better than the Port Authority terminal, although Greyhound just recently kicked Trailways out of the Albany terminal as Greyhound owns the Albany terminal. This in turn forced Trailways to operate out of a temporary trailer across from the Albany terminal.
I knew it was Port Authority having taken buses to there many times. But even in the 50’s I never noticed polished steel and stone and awe would not be the first reaction I would think of.
