Warning: This page contains spoilers for the April 28, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.
Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category U.S. Landmarks) for Friday, April 28, 2023 (Season 39, Game 165):
In April 1975, to symbolize the start of America’s bicentennial, President Ford lit a third lantern at this landmark
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Kevin Belle, a trail planner from Silver Spring, Maryland![]() |
Katherine Cohen, a grad student & museum worker from New York, New York![]() |
Eric Anderson, an operations director from Brooklyn, New York (1-day total: $7,600)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Tonight, Eric Anderson returns as champion after getting a very difficult Final Jeopardy! clue correct last night. Tonight’s challengers—as Ken Jennings hosts his final regular-play game of the season—are New York’s Katherine Cohen and Silver Spring’s Kevin Belle.
So far this week, $39,198 has been won by our champions. Since the doubling of dollar values in 2001, it is already guaranteed not to be the lowest total over 5 consecutive episodes (that is $36,398 from September 14–20, 2007), but the lowest total winnings over a calendar week is still potentially in play (that record is $47,198 for the week of September 17–21, 2007. One note on this record: It is not $46,899, as the January 7–11, 2013 week did include a tie game.)
Unfortunately, if you watch Jeopardy! on ABC in the early evening, you’re going to be in for some difficulty—the show will be pre-empted in your area due to the NFL Draft. However, because the show is syndicated, Jeopardy! may be airing as usual in other areas. Please check local listings to see when the show will be played in your area. Also, due to this, I won’t be tweeting the statistics as I usually do tonight.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Paul Revere’s famed midnight ride on April 18, 1775, Gerald Ford gave a speech at, and lit a third lantern at, the Old North Church—the third lantern being a great reference (in my opinion) to the famed “one if by land, two if by sea” signal set up at that location; Paul Revere then alerted the American colonial militia as to the British troop movements; the colonial militia was able to convene at Lexington for the first military engagement of the revolution on April 19, 1775.

(Categories: The 3-Digit Years; Animated Entertainment; A Real Body Busy; Literary Lions; “G” As In Global; It’s German For…)
Kevin’s strong play continued, with his only incorrect response being on a Daily Double in which he bet very conservatively. Katherine eventually got to the last one very late in the round, could have bet for the lead, and chose not to. She then proceeded to get two of the last three clues of the round incorrect in an attempt to reach the lead—definitely a case of “what might have been” there, for sure! As it was, Kevin was in a strong position, but not a runaway, going into Final, while Eric only managed to get in first once in the entire round.
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Kevin 19 correct 1 incorrect
Katherine 17 correct 5 incorrect
Eric 6 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 26 (0 today).

Andy’s Thoughts:
- The player who finds the most Daily Doubles generally has the best chance of winning—picking seven clues either guaranteed not to have a Daily Double (or are incredibly unlikely not to) in Double Jeopardy! is generally not a good strategy for one who wants to win.
- Today’s box score: April 28, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Kevin $14,200 Katherine $8,400 Eric $1,200)
Eric: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $1,199)
Katherine: Bet between $3,201 and $5,999; this will pass Kevin if Kevin is incorrect while keeping Eric locked out for second place. (Actual bet: $6,000)
Kevin: Standard cover bet over Katherine is $2,601. (Actual bet: $2,601)

“One if by land
Two if by sea
Three if by Ford.”
The FJ clues HAVE been hard recently, but I’m still not convinced there’s a cabal of difficulty in play here.
LOL.
Not an easy clue. The building during the “British Are Coming” ride (which Revere wasn’t the only one doing, and that was only said during planning) is a tough get. For some reason, my memory thought lighthouse, not church, and that’s my error. Anyone not from New England will struggle to get beyond Paul Revere in 30 seconds, and I don’t think the judges would accept just “Boston Church” given how many there are. There was no way this was going to be a triple get if they required something as obscurely specific as the church’s name.
I remembered Paul Revere, and “One if by land, two if by sea” immediately, from grade school. However, I could only come up with “the church in Boston.” Drat!
