Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Publications) for Monday, May 15, 2023 (Season 39, Game 176):
The co-founder of this magazine that began in 1967 said its name comes primarily from a song title but noted a band name as well
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Wendy Swanson, a retired teacher from Portland, Oregon![]() |
Ben Chan, a philosophy professor from Green Bay, Wisconsin (3-day total: $69,001)![]() |
Hannah Wilson, a data scientist from Chicago, Illinois (8-day total: $229,801)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today is a rare day in modern Jeopardy!; we have two returning co-champions today. Ben Chan could not defend his title on April 17, so he returns today. Unfortunately for him, his perfect record of having 3 runaways in 3 games is very much in jeopardy, as the returning champion is 8-time winner Hannah Wilson. The prediction model, which normally gives players of Ben and Hannah’s caliber more than a 70% chance of winning, have put Hannah and Ben in a 40-45% range apiece. (Poor Wendy Swanson, who was drawn to compete against both of these buzzsaws today.)
Episode 5 of Jeopardy! Masters airs tonight at 8:00 (7:00 Central) on ABC in the United States; in Canada, it will air on CTV2.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

November 1967 saw the first issue of famed music magazine Rolling Stone hit the streets. In his inaugural “Letter from the Editor”, co-founder Jann Wenner said that the magazine’s title was inspired by the Muddy Waters blues classic “Rollin’ Stone”, Bob Dylan’s 1965 hit “Like A Rolling Stone”; the band The Rolling Stones also took its name from the Waters song.

Having been in my music prime in 1967, today’s FJ was a piece of cake for me. I think almost anyone in my demographic cohort would have gotten this one. 🙂
Nice run for Hannah. Today just was not her day. Congrats to Ben on a dominant performance!
I saw the question and knew it would be a triple get instantly. It’s a magazine that shares its name with a band and a song. All you need to know is that Rolling Stone exists.
Like many of you, I thought Ben and Hannah would both be lighting up the board but Ben just dominated her. If they get a rematch in the TOC (since today’s win qualifies Ben – 4 wins, $129k, destroyed Hannah… yup), Hannah will be out for blood.
That was unexpected…..I thought it would be more of a nail biter. But sometimes the draw of categories and DD just favors you and sometimes you have an off day. It can swing either way.
Ben was a freight train, but I always liked Hannah’s strong runs, they are both impressive in their own ways
It probably won’t, but this game should serve as a good reminder to some of the people who like to disparage players based on how they performed in a single appearance.
Boy, if anybody deserves a Second Chance, it’s Wendy! Can you imagine finally getting onto the show only to face not one, but two experienced champs? I imagined the two of them dueling to the end and then wiping each other out with a miss in FJ, leaving Wendy as the unexpected winner, but alas it was not to be. ☺️
