Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Literary Groups) for Tuesday, May 30, 2023 (Season 39, Game 187):
Windermere, Thirlmere & Grasmere are 3 of the sites that helped give a 19th century literary group this name
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Nathan Dennis, a C-17 loadmaster from Charlotte, North Carolina![]() |
Ilhana Redzovic, an investment associate from Chicago, Illinois![]() |
Diandra D’Alessio, a technical writer from Montreal, Quebec, Canada (2-day total: $15,700)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
No, Jeopardy! is not in reruns, as much as some Facebook commenters have believed, thanks to the partial operability of the Jeopardy! website as it stands right now. Last night’s boxscore has yet to be posted, and we are on Day 2 of having zero contestant information on the website. Thus, once again, Jeopardy! fans looking for information on the day’s contestants are stuck looking at the closing “preview” at the end of yesterday’s games. (And, of course, the fact that other outlets have failed to find or use this information is another reason why I am led to believe that my work is being stolen—because if those other outlets actually watched the entire show, they would have this information already.)
In any case, 2-day champion Diandra D’Alessio of Montreal takes on Chicago’s Ilhana Redzovic & Charlotte’s Nathan Dennis.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: Who are the Lake Poets?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
With its most famous members being William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Southey, the Lake Poets are a famed group of 19th-century poets who all lived in the Lake District in England. Wordsworth was arguably the poet whose poetic vision was most influenced by the area’s landscape; Coleridge and Southey, while living in the area, both had differing viewpoints from Wordsworth.
Interestingly, this was an easier Final Jeopardy! for me, if only because this group was in my head from having discounted the Lake Poets on a recent LearnedLeague question about the Graveyard Poets.

Double Jeopardy! saw both challengers pick up Daily Doubles; Nathan bet what I assume was a unit number—1356—while Ilhana bet $5,000 on hers. Unfortunately, $6,000 might have been the better choice, as Ilhana ended up a few hundred dollars short of a runaway.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I personally prefer players who make an effort to try win the game, and not bet numbers that are inside jokes to one’s friends and/or coworkers.
- Today’s box score: May 30, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Ilhana $21,000 Nathan $10,756 Diandra $7,200)
Diandra: Limit your bet to $6,175; this way, you have the best chance of staying ahead of Nathan if he’s incorrect. (Actual bet: $7,199)
Ilhana: Standard cover bet over Nathan is $513. (Actual bet: $600)
Nathan: You have to bet at least $9,733 to have any chance of winning today. (Actual bet: $3,745)

I had heard of the Lake Poets, and knew that “mere” means “lake”, so I got this; but if I had been asked for the NAMES of the Lake Poets, I would have drawn a blank, even though one of my favorite poems about flowers is Wordsworth’s “I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud”—and it even mentions a lake. Thanks, Andy!
The other two names were unfamiliar to me, but I recognized Windermere immediately as a lake in the Lake District, leading me to the Lake Poets.
This looked like one of those ‘bad math’ situations where Nathan was looking to lock on Diandra for second not realizing he could still catch Ilhana if she answered incorrectly. And in a situation like that since I’m only winning if I get it correct, rather than risk bad math, I’m going all in
My best guess is that he doubled his current score in his head, but made a math error and thought 10,756 doubled was only 20,512; thus, thinking there was no way to catch up to Ilhana, he settled for just trying to lock up second. But I don’t have any better guesses
Does anyone else think that the “contestant” picture of Ilhana and the “winner” picture of Ilhana look at least as much like Diandra’s “winner” picture as Diandra’s “contestant” picture did? (Though they do not look THAT much alike “in action”. Not talking mannerisms, just being on video vs. a still picture.)
The only Windermere I was familiar with prior to this clue was the town outside of Orlando where many current and former athletes live (the first one that popped into my mind was Tiger Woods). It’s situated among several lakes, which explains its etymology.
I’m sure Andy is aware by now, but for everyone else: the “This Week’s Contestants” feature on the official website is up to date, and yesterday’s box score has been posted. This was around noon for me, corresponding to 9 am in Culver City. Definitely seems like someone left for the long weekend without making sure the website updates would be made when necessary.
In addition to the reasons set out above regarding the in-jokes on Daily Double wagers, there is also the danger of being unaware of an alternate meaning of a number, as you note at the bottom of Betting Strategy 101, and referenced earlier this season in relation to a Final Jeopardy bet.
Lloyd Sy’s $8,888 bet, right?
Yes. (January 4, 2023)
The lake poets seems to be familiar to me since I read about Coleridge and Wordsworth works in grade school. The poem I wandered lonely as a cloud helped me greatly here
Bloomsbury Group got in my head when I saw the category and that effectively turned my brain off and prevented me from cogitating further sadly.
Fun Fact: The character Audrey Roberts of the British drama serial Coronation Street lived in Grasmere Drive. (Yes, Brits live in streets while anglo North Americans live on streets.) Oh my. TWO facts at no extra charge.
I will miss Diandra’s happy energy. She was great. O Canada…
Same. This was the first day in a long time where I really liked the personalities of all 3 players. It made it easier for me to see Diandra not win again.
This Final Jeopardy MAY have been easier for Andy, based on his LearnedLeadue experience, but unfortunatley for me, the “answer” meant nothing to me, so I couldn’t even make an “educated” guess.
Isn’t Cerebellum a party of the brain that also rhymes with Plum??
The clue said “largest part of the brain”; while it is part of the brain, it is not the largest part.
