Pavel Chekov was a character introduced for the second season of Star Trek (the original series) in 1967. According to legend, Gene Roddenberry had been made aware of a Pravda editorial that criticized the series for not having a Russian on board, in spite of the Russians being the first into space. Walter Koenig was cast as Chekov as Roddenberry was hoping to have an actor reminiscent of one of The Beatles or The Monkeys on the show.

Nice to have you back Andy, I appreciate all that you do!

  2. I have to say that was a pretty brutal FJ! Not much in the way of help, such as “this sci-fi character” or some such. I guess we’re all supposed to have the running dates of the original ST memorized?

    • Michael Johnston | June 15, 2023 at 2:52 pm |

I think the category is implying that the character appears in Film & TV, which should help some, but yeah… not knowing the trivia details of STTOS would make this guesswork.

  3. Didn’t remember the dates of the series and went with Illya Kuryakin.

  4. Fascinating phenomenon in the box score: all players were 100% successful on the buzzer in DJ, implying no simultaneous buzzer attempts on the same question in that round. (Neilay did pick up a rebound from Suresh.)

I do find it a bit hard to believe that this is completely accurate, though.

  5. Immediately thought of Hogan’s Heroes but none of the German characters were on “our side.” Then my mind went to Russian characters and Chekov was the only one I could think of and the year seemed right for Star Trek. I wonder if I’d come up with it under the pressure of being on the show though.

  6. My mind went immediately to Illya Kuryakin and Pavel Chekov, but like Bruce and Kasey above, I could not remember the specific dates. I was (erroneously) thinking 1965 for Star Trek, so went with Illya Kuryakin. I think I was thrown off on the Star Trek date because our NBC Station (Nashville, TN) did not air Star Trek until its second season and I tend to forget that Chekov was added in the second season.

Actually, my mind just as instantaneously went to Gene Roddenberry as “show’s creator” so I should have given more weight to that as (had I thought about it) I would have imagined ‘U.N.C.L.E.’ was likely created by a team. I would have been half wrong as ‘U.N.C.L.E.’ was created by two men, but still I would have chosen correctly between the two characters!

[In high school I “had a thing” for Illya Kuryakin and was interested to see in IMDb that during the run of ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’, David McCallum received more fan mail than any other actor in MGM’s history, including such popular stars as Clark Gable and Elvis Presley.]

    • Bill Vollmer | June 15, 2023 at 11:18 pm |

When the answer was revealed, I confidently said “Who is Illya Kuryakin?” Well we know the correct response is “who is ESM. Pavel Chelov?” But being a “Trekker” I remember reading about Walter Koenig character being created in response to the criticism rather than what the Final Jeopardy clue said.
      Welcome Back, Andy.

      • I very much get your point, but the clue did not say “because the show’s creator wanted” and I would be willing to bet that what the clue says is something that Gene said somewhere at some time (if not more than once). I recently watched the Star Trek documentaries on Amazon Prime and they showed Gene to be someone who would not hesitate to bend the truth for self-promotion. [However, as a long-standing Trekker myself, I would not be surprised to find out that Gene actually did think this prior to Russian complaints, but was having a hard enough time (with NBC) getting a black, an Asian, and a woman on the bridge.]

  7. I can’t imagine we’ve seen that many champions from North Dakota.

    • Ignoring Holly, there’s only been three; Rocky Schmidt (2x), Bill Schantz (1x) and Emily Heaney (1x). Stranger things have happened, but I don’t feel confident that we’re gonna see any ToC competitors from that state anytime soon.
