Also, if you’re reading this, this is great news, and it means that our servers are back online! It’s been a very draining last two days on me emotionally, and over the next few days I’ll have some suggestions on how you can best support the site during its recovery.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

The House Un-American Activities Committee (or the House Committee on Un-American Activities), was created to investigate those in the United States suspected to have fascist or communist ties. Created in 1938 (though there had been three previous committees investigative the same since 1918) and originally chaired by Martin Dies, Jr. from Texas, it became a standing committee in 1945. It’s most famous for the investigation of Hollywood in 1947, leading to the unfortunate blacklisting of many writers and directors. By the 1960s, it was generally lampooned by both political satirists and those who were subpoenaed by the committee, and the committee ceased to exist in January 1975.

Nice to have you back Andy, you were missed!

  2. Pam+Schultz | June 15, 2023 at 2:25 pm |

If I was frustrated yesterday not finding you, I can’t even know your frustration not being able to be found. Oh my goodness a FJ I knew the question. Doesn’t happen often. Thanks for all you do for us fans.

  3. I didn’t know WHAT was goin’ on! I kept tryin’ & tryin’ & TRYIN’ to get on this website and the line that normally scrolls across while the page was loading would just stop and then this “error 504” message would pop on the screen. I said, “what in the sam hill is goin’ on?!?…can’t get on the Jeopardy fan page!!” Anyway Andy..glad you’re back!

  4. Michael Johnston | June 15, 2023 at 3:08 pm |

I did not know the importance of those years, but I guessed the HUAC just based on the period, “Congressional” and “subpoenas”.

  5. It is good to see you back andy thank you for sharing this page! I also got the HUAC due to the congressional stuff being the keyword here. Happy to see Suzanne and holly getting the final today

  6. Around 9 AM every morning I check this site for Final Jeopardy! and test my aging brain. Around 1 PM I check back for the game recap. The server issue made me realize the importance of this site to my day. Thank you so much, Andy, for the effort you put into it.

  7. Yippee, you’re back.

Nice to have you back Andy. I was missing you yesterday. Thanks for responding to my email…

I assume that the word “Commission” would not be the same as “Committee”!!

      • Bill Vollmer | June 16, 2023 at 11:34 am |

Especially not when the answer refers to a proper name or title. I was a bit surprised when the initials HUAC was accepted as an correct response, but I believe that was an official anagram, so under show rules, it’s the same as if one said “What is the House UnAmerican Activites Committee?” I knew the correct reponse, but think I didn’t quite phrase the name right. My trouble was in trying to phrase “UnAmerican.”

    • sure am glad that did not affect the outcome. I’m sure there would have been an outcry since they accepted the acronym and the incorrect response did not affect the acronym.

      • Perhaps there would have been an outcry, but that would not have been appropriate since two players just putting a person’s last name and the third putting a first name, too, but only the first letter of it is correct should/would not be deemed correct.

Andy, I was flummoxed on Tuesday when this site vanished without a trace. Fortunately, I googled your site, and it brought up a link to The Jeopardy Fan Twitter, in which you noted the site would be down a couple of days, and you hoped to have it back up by Thursday.

I so enjoy reading your commentary and analysis, and it left a bjg empty feeling not being able to find you for two days. Thank you so much for your hard work.

  10. I am really surprised that essentially they all three knew what it was! Knowing what the House Un-American Activities Committee was (as I did/do) is far different that being able to recognize that was the reference and remembering the name of it. I guessed The Warren Commission. Of course that makes no sense for 1938, but I got bogged down on pre-1969 to 1975 and forgot about the beginning of the clue.

I recall seeing a documentary recently (I believe it was on CNN) about the life of famed NY attorney Roy Cohn. He was “right hand man” to Joseph McCarthy, and later became lawyer and mentor to Donald Trump. No wonder, being mentored by a guy with such a bombastic personality, a bully, a win-at-any-cost mentality (through legal measures or not so legal methods), that Trump became the creature he is today. After 20 years of service to the Trump family, Cohn was dying from AIDS…did they even come and visit him in his dying days…take a guess?

  12. Oh good you’re back in business! Yesterday was so weird and having you not available was just the way my day went. Our TV was not cooperating. HUAC was my guess, too bad Kiran didn’t use the acronym.
